Yay! My wife’s birthday

Dec 30, 2012 18:52

Yesterday the weather forecast said 100% of snow. So, we stayed in and cooked a turkey.

The snow stopped some time over the night leaving about 6inches/15cm, I cleaned it off of the cars in the morning and we set off for my wife’s birthday dinner.

My wife had asked to go to the Fireside Feast at Salem’s Cross: http://www.salemcrossinn.com/DiningEvents/fireplacefeast.asp
I bought tickets some time ago so I was glad the weather cleared up for the day.

Through much snow, traffic lights and tribulations we passed.

But, we did arrive.

We were early, but not the first.

So, we decided to go on the sleigh ride promised. Before yesterday I was worried it would be the wagon ride they give if there is no snow. Not a worry today.
We missed the first sleigh, but caught the second.

Our horses were Ranger and Rick, the driver seemed to think that very funny.

It was cold and windy.

But, we had dressed for it, so it wasn’t too bad.

We did have a bit of a traffic jam, but it was worked out without too much fuss.

It wasn’t exactly “dashing through the snow” and it was a two “horse open sleigh”, but still fun for us. The folks who had not dressed for the weather didn’t seem to like it quite as much.

I did mention cold and windy, right?

Then, we went in to watch our dinner cook.

They have a cooking spit a couple of centuries old they use to cook the meat.

They let you help out in preparations if you want. So, my wife helped out with the apple pie. They have a very nice apple peeler.

My wife was enamored of their wooden bowl.

I liked the way they heated the cider and the wine. They pulled a red hot poker out of the fire and used it to stir the drinks.

Once the meat was done they took it off to cut it, and put on the pot for the chowder.

They added the components while it was on the fire.

Then they had folks there take turns mixing it.

I did not take a turn as I’m lazy. My wife did not as it was her birthday and she had already helped with the apples.

Once the ingredients were in and mixed, they took it off of the fire and added the stuff that would make it poisonous to me. (Cream)

Then, we were sent upstairs for dinner. But, upstairs wasn’t quite ready for us yet. So, we waited outside the dining room while they finished making up the room.
There is a lovely mural about the natives killing everyone at the inn during the King Phillip’s war.

But, that was a long time ago and no one attacked the place today.

The did let us into the dining room, which was very nice.

My wife said the chowder was very good. I did not try any.

The prime rib for dinner was very good.

For desert, the apple pie with a huge pile of whipped cream.

The person handing it out seemed to have a lot of fun flinging the cream onto people’s pie.

My wife’s apple pie is better.

Once dinner was over, we set off for home only stopping at one used book store on the way.

Hopefully my wife had a good time. I think she did.
