We stayed at the hotel near the airport so had plenty of time in the morning to pack our stuff, eat breakfast and go the 5 minutes to the airport.
Too much time. We got there before we could check in our luggage. That took a while to sort out as it let us do the check in process and put tags on our bags, but there was no where to turn them in.
There were no signs. No instructions. Put these tags on your suitcase and bring them to the check in for your airline, which isn’t there.
We got a soda and croissant at the snack bar and waited.
Eventually, they did open up some check in booths for us. But, a line had formed and we were at the end.
We still managed to check in with plenty of extra time.
I was surprised at how long our flight was. It was the same length as ones we’ve made from London, despite being closer. I assume the winds up north are worse? Don’t know.
I was cheap and bought us tickets on the cheap Iceland airline. The seats weren’t much more than boards and about as comfortable. They make you pay extra for everything. I’m surprised there wasn’t a charge for the air we breathed.
I was worried as I expected to get in earlier and had only paid for parking in the lot until 18:00 and that’s when they estimated we’d land. Then, immigrations, customs, baggage retrieval and getting back to the car sounded too long. And, the parking company said “too bad, you’ll have to pay extra.”
But, the winds favored us and we landed at 17:15, got through everything quickly and got to the parking garage by 18:00. Sadly, we flew in a different airline than we arrived and had to walk across the entire parking area to get to the car.
It turns out the parking company gives you an extra 15 minutes assuming you pay at the front and have to walk back to your car.
We left the garage at 18:13, so had almost 2 minutes before having to pay a penalty.
Then, a problem. There are three tunnels from the airport back to Boston. One east, one west and one both.
One was shut down for the summer for repairs.
But, the big one going both ways was also shut down for some reason. Why wasn’t clear. There is some news story from that day saying it was for transport of an organ donor to one of the hospitals, but it implied that was in the morning, not the evening.
But, it was closed.
Traffic was stopped.
Not slow. Stopped.
So, we took the north route out of town. We went through a town I worked in back in the 90’s, but it had been a while.
In good cases, the drive from the airport is less than an hour.
Monday we didn’t get to the highway until almost an hour in.
But, we got home.
It was a great trip.
Now, 4 more days at my job and then I start at the new place.
