I got started with the laundry early today as the town might shut off the water without notice due to road repairs. I figured the odds go up as the day goes on, so I should o things early.
As I waited for it I was playing on the computer. My wife was still asleep.
I heard a tapping on the glass window at the edge of the living room.
I looked over and saw a squirrel there.
My first thought was they had learned the knocking on door trick we saw raccoons use in Maine many years ago.
http://fbhjr.livejournal.com/947980.html But, I saw it wasn’t really looking at me with a "I’m cute, give me food!" look.
Instead, it was walking along the edge, tapping the glass and digging in the leaves there.
I walked over to the glass to look at it. I looked up at me, tapped the glass once, and went back to digging around.
I tapped the glass and said "shoo" to it while waving my hand.
It tapped back and looked up and me. It gave a bit of a nod and went back to digging.
I took this at is saying "I don’t know what this invisible shield between us is, but I know you can’t get through it either."
I think the squirrels have figured out how glass works. They aren’t making it on their own yet, but are happy to use ours.
I went over to the sliding door and clicked the latch off.
The squirrel looked right at me, then turned and ran.
Yeah. They understand doors.
