So, I've been tweeting about it for the past couple of days, but I think it's time for the full story.
I've been thinking about adopting a dog for that past few months. On Tuesday, I finally went to the Humane Society to look at the dogs they had there. Most HS have a large amount of pit bulls and pit bulls mixes, and this one was no exception. I'm neither a fan of pit bulls, nor am I allowed to have one due to the lease, so my search for dogs was quickly reduced.
The first dog that caught my eye was a female German Shepherd mix named Sheeba. She was a very sweet dog, however, not a very good match for me. She really wasn't interested in me at all, and on top of that, she'd been an outdoor dog her whole life, and I was looking for indoor dog. She was also very submissive which usually is a sign of previous abuse by an owner.
The next dog I saw that I really like was a female Yellow Lab mix named Timberland. However, she was new to the shelter and still on 'hold' as they have to give a certain amount of time for any possible owners, even though she was a stray. What really shocked me was her age, she looked like she was still a puppy, but was apparently six years old already.
But, instead, I decided to take a closer look at one of the dogs that first caught my eye when I went into the shelter. His name was Scout and was a male Treeing Walker Coonhound (Walker Hound, for short). Even though I've never had a hound before, I decided to take him out for a little while because he got me with that hounddog face of his. I pretty much fell in love on the spot. He's such a sweetheart, it was unbelieveable that someone surrendered him to the HS.
So, the next day, I went back to finalize everything to adopt Scout. I had been looking forward to it all day, in fact, it was the only thing on my mind. When I got to the shelter though, I found out that he had come down with Kennel cough (basically Whooping cough for dogs) and was on medication and was unable to be released until a vet gives him a clean bill of health, or is willing to release him to me with necessary medications. I can't lie; I was completely heartbroken, as I wanted nothing more then to take him home that night. But, I still adopted him regardless. I'm going to go to the shelter everyday to at least spend time with him until I'm able to take him home, which doesn't look like it's going to happen until next week.
Now, this isn't a picture of Scout, but of a generic Walker Hound. He looks quite similar, and I will make sure to get some pictures of him as soon as possible. Walker hounds basically look like overgrown beagles, and they really are sweet dogs.
