IF you are asked to stay at home, please do. Plan for shelter-in-place if things take off like... a viral pandemic. (Because... that's what it is.)
Our patients MUST wear a mask on treatment, and if they refuse, they cannot come for their life-saving treatment.
That's the policy. It sucks. We're rural. We're the only unit in town.
This is not a minor ask. My patients, if they get this thing, are at HIGH RISK for death. The highest, just about. When you refuse to wear a mask because it fogs your glasses, or even because you don't like it, in dialysis you are exposing everyone else to risk. You are saying that you matter more. Unfortunately, people don't remember when people were forcibly hospitalized and treated for TB, etc. The state has the power to do this.
I tried to negotiate with the company on a patient's behalf, perhaps putting them at the end of the day, but the facility will not permit this. It is hard to know what the right thing to do is, but for now I am charged with enforcing policy.
We asked the patient repeatedly to wear a mask and in response the patient called my nurse "slow" because she kept asking. I fully expect the patient to levy a complaint to the state. And that, folks is my current biggest threat locally to public safety.
Arseholes.
