Not totally Fatshionable, but related to Fatshionista nonetheless…

As I was skimming the LJ this afternoon, playing catch up, I stumbled upon a potentially "political" post, wherein there were five instances where the word LAME was used…in a potentially offensive manner. I made a generic comment in response to each of these folks, but this post ( Read more... )

I think that you cannot compare the weight of words like gay and retard which yes have alternate meanings and definitions yet they are still used inappropriatley with words like lame.

gay-adjective 1. having or showing a merry, lively mood: gay spirits; gay music.
2. bright or showy: gay colors; gay ornaments.
3. given to or abounding in social or other pleasures: a gay social season.
4. licentious; dissipated; wanton: The baron is a gay old rogue with an eye for the ladies.
5. homosexual.
6. of, indicating, or supporting homosexual interests or issues: a gay organization.
I have no problem when the word is used with one of these definitions but when it is most often heard is "Thats so gay" not utilizing any of the above deffinitions.

retarded

adjective
1. relatively slow in mental or emotional or physical development; "providing a secure and sometimes happy life for the retarded" [ant: precocious]

noun
1. people collectively who are mentally retarded; "he started a school for the retarded" [syn: mentally retarded]
Again when its used it is often not in the context of these tru deffinitions.

lame
Disabled so that movement, especially walking, is difficult or impossible: Lame from the accident, he walked with a cane. A lame wing kept the bird from flying.
Marked by pain or rigidness: a lame back.
Weak and ineffectual; unsatisfactory: a lame attempt to apologize; lame excuses for not arriving on time.
Lame when often used fits within one of its actual deffinitions.

Ok...That said I appreciate knowing how it can be construed as abelistic in certain circumstances. And though I disagree I appreciate your comment and your willingness to express yourself.
