On Fanservice Versus Theme

Nov 05, 2011 18:27

Beware:  After this first paragraph lies a bunch of body-shaming comments that I don't actually condone at all.  In fact, I'm posting them here because I find them (or would, hypothetically, find them) fucking infuriating.

"I'm not into short women.  Make female gnomes taller."

"I don't find tall women sexy.  Female trolls need to be shorter."

"Hooves are a turn-off.  Female draenei need human-style feet."

"B-cups are too small.  Give female blood elves bigger tits."

"I don't like big tits.  Female humans need to be a C-cup or less."

"Beast-women based off predators aren't attractive.  Female worgen need to be based off of deer."  (Oh, wait.)

"Plus-sized women are ugly.  Female pandaren need to be svelte."

Is it just me, or does anyone else really see little to no difference between any of these statements?  Because to me, these all sound like someone valuing fanservice above theme.  Not to mention pretty damn self-entitled.

And in some cases, it sounds suspiciously like body-shaming.  Especially when you start comparing this, this, this or this to Therazane the Stonemother, Peter Griffin, or a fucking beachball.

And no, little fancreatures, "no one will play them because no one plays the female model of (insert overall underplayed race here)" is not a good argument.  At all.
