Bluegrass New Years

Jan 01, 2007 00:15

I channel-surfed for a New Years television broadcast I could stand to watch for more than five minutes. Didn't find one.

But, the local PBS station is showing Garrison Keillor's New Years Special. And I tune in on a bluegrass number with a band that includes the great mandolin player, Sam Bush, and Jerry Douglas *from Alison Krauss and Union Station fame* on the Dobro. Now *that* I can listen to all night.

I first heard Sam Bush when he was a member of a group called Hot Rize. They mixed bluegrass with jazz. That band included Bela Fleck who has been touring all over the world with his band, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. They experiment with all kinds of instrumentalists joining them at shows - oboe and bassoon players, sitar and digeridoo players, for example.

Ooh, Emmy Lou Harris is on. *Love* her voice.

Yeah, I'll stay here a while.
