Oscars Red Carpet

Okay, look, rat's nest hair seemed to be the trend last night, so rather than continually calling it out, I'm just going to level the paying field as far as that goes, and maybe call out the nice hair. I don't know what the deal is, but clearly a bunch of stylists had these women drinking the Kool Aid on this one ( Read more... )

entertainment, red carpet

I disagree on a handful, especially the JLo. My biggest WTF though is Antonio Banderas as Fidel Castro, International Man of Mystery. Gyllenhaal and Madsen look pretty awful as well. I loved Queen Latifah's, and I thought Bullock looked pretty good. More comfortable than usual, and quite pretty. Streep's dress screams inappropriately frumpy to me, but 1) she's Meryl Streep, she can wear whatever she wants, and 2) what do I know from frumpy these days? Fey looked pretty good too.

The only thing I'll say about Streep is that her last two outings in Chris March have been, relatively, way way less frumpy than her past outfits. It's so refreshing to see her in anything that even hints that she has a figure.

You liked the JLo napkin dress?????

I'll grant that--she's wearing better fabrics, but still sooooooo Amish or something.

And yes, I did. It was interesting, and she is JLo.

I like JLo's too. In fact, I disagreed with a bunch. I love Charlize's. Those rosettes are a bold move, but, in my eye, great. I think Diane Kruger's is amazing. And I love that particular grey and pale yellow of Sarah Jessica Parker's! I like that liquid silk in general.

SJP's had some design flaws, and she's sometimes a bit scary looking courtesy of botox, but I *did* like the colors!

And the Diane Kruger fits my own aesthetic; I mean, I'd wear it to the Oscars. Or to the grocery store.

I will say to you what I said to someone on FB: did you see the back of that thing??? I think it was busy for the sake of being busy.

Yes, I saw it (and said "Ooh, she's gonna get in trouble for that") and wasn't surprised that it's Chanel. I get the critiques, but 50 lbs ago, I'd have worn it.

I am not just not a fan of dresses that are so purposelessly busy that they distract from the wearer rather than enhancing her. In another context, the point might be the dress rather than the wearer, but that should not be the case here. YMMV.

People keep calling Charlize's rosettes cinnbons. Hee.

I thought the design of SJPs was interesting, but that color combination just hurt my eyes for some reason.

On anyone else, that dress would have been a nightmare, but I still don't like it.
