Good thoughts if you can, for my son Ace, who is taking his PhD prelim exams. Today is the written exam, and next Wednesday the orals. He's studying Astrophysics, and he's good, but there is so much stress when they can ask you anything you've ever studied, or actually anything THEY've ever studied. He's been studying for weeks and weeks, and it's all down to these exams.
House projects - two days ago we had a big storm go through, and lightning struck somewhere close. It fried one half of one lighting circuit in the house, and one port of the cable modem (the other three ports are fine, as are the computers). Going through trying to find where the problem is in the lighting circuit. Also, moved six cubic yards of topsoil this afternoon via shovel and wheelbarrow, from the pile dumped at the bottom of my driveway, to the backyard to fill in the hole from and old above-ground swimming pool. The depression in an already low backyard collected lots of water every time it rained. The birds liked it, but it was a swamp! We put a lot of dirt in it, one wheelbarrow at a time. Six yards was supposed to be enough to fill the hole, put some dirt next to the house to slope the ground a little better, fill a few holes and low spots elsewhere in the yard, and fill five garden beds. It did the first two, and then we were out of dirt. It really compressed more than we expected.
Finally, fun stuff. My son Speedy and I are going to the Weird Al Yankovic concert tonight. If I don't fall asleep from all the work I did today, I expect to have a lot of fun being silly with my son!
