9 January 2020: "And Awa-ay We Go!"

Jan 09, 2020 11:33

I had been on two small boat cruises before I went on my my Caribbean cruise. There were 65 passengers on the cruise I took through the Panama canal; I probably met and talked to every single person on that trip. Our ship on the Rhone River cruise was several times larger, but still had only one seating at meals which meant I had ample opportunity ( Read more... )

woohoo! I'm glad you had a good experience (and clearly do not suffer seasickness, which would be my concern) - and how EXCITING that you are going to Norway!

The Northern Lights are amazing - I've only seen them once, and they were very muted - but it was pretty magical!

I hop e I'm not seasick on this Norwegian trip. I didn't have even a flutter on the Caribbean cruise, but the sea was so calm that most of the time I had to go out on my balcony and look over the railing to confirm that we were moving.

What I did learn on that trip was that, whenever possible, the ship only leaves port in the evening, sails through the night, and is again dock when you get up. If it is rough on this trip and either I feel nauseous or I am afraid of falling, I can retreat to my lovely cabin and snuggle down., knowing room service will deliver anything I want or need. The North Sea will almost certainly be rougher than the Caribbean, and we do have two days where we sail all day.

I have been at sea during two Force 10 storms, once when I was fourteen, crossing the Pacific, and again crossing from the north of England to Bruges when I was in my 50's. Never missed a meal either time. What's true at 14 or 54 may not be true at 82. We'll see. FanSee

I am working on assembling a wardrobe that will keep me warm while I stand on the top deck and see what I can see. The top deck is eight decks above the water line, so I am expecting a very cold breeze. Brrr. FanSee

We did Alaska as our first cruise and weren't impressed. I'm hoping with more time spent there, being with close friends and on our favorite ship, we will be this time.

One of these years I'll get you a holiday card on or before the first day of the holiday. Just don't hold your breathe, waiting. The lateness of my sentiments doesn't affect their sincerity, however. FanSee

I am fortunate to be able to afford to go and healthy enough to travel, even though I can't do some of the risky things I did in my 50s, such as climbing all over ruined castles in Scotland. "To everything there is a season...." FanSee
