Our Christmas tradition is to go to a movie with my daughter-in-law's family, then go out for Chinese: a very Jewish Christmas. We've done it now for years, surely: at least every year since John and Pam came home from living in Germany for three-and-a-half years. That would be 2013, if I recall correctly. At any rate, long enough to be an established tradition.
This year we agreed, after some discussion, to go see the 3:05 showing of "On the Basis of Sex," with Felicity Jones and Armie Hammer, then out to eat at our favorite Chinese restaurant Lee How Fook. First of all, the movie was delightful, inspiring, and very moving, at least to this elderly C.P.A. And, according to the NYTimes review, hewed closely to what really happened, which is good to know about a biopic.
Then on to Lee How Fook's with Pam's step-mother and father and her brother and his wife. Their food is all so good, but I particularly loved the Peking duck and the shrimp with Chinese broccoli which I thought was especially tasty bok choi. The meal was educational as well as tasty: now I know what Chinese broccoli is.
The only problem with the meal was the restaurant's lack of ambiance. We were in a back room, containing four, large round tables. Each table seated at least eight, and with all four tables filled, the noise meant it was hard to hear anybody unless they were seated right next to you. Fortunately, the party seated next to us left mid-way through our meal, and before their replacement was seated, we were able to get some cross-table conversation going.
All in all, quite a satisfactory day. FanSee
