The Pope in Philadelphia

Sep 22, 2015 22:52

Over the weekend, I noticed that railings used to block off sidewalks temporarily had been left at the corner of my block:

Hmmm. That made me decide to look more closely at the Temporary No Parking signs all up and down Lombard Street:

Note: My trash is supposed to be collected Thursday morning, September 24th. Are trash trucks really going to roll down Lombard Street on the 24th?

This morning I went around the corner for a long over-due mani-pedi. I stopped at Whole Foods and Super Fresh (both on the same block at the manicurist), and when I came home, lo and behold, the temporary railings had appeared almost in front of my house:

They weren't there when I'd left home two hours earlier.

Those are the steps to my front door. If the papal cavalcade does come down Lombard Street, I won't be surprised if my steps are solid with people...people who will leave behind bottles, candy wrappers, and even pizza boxes. O joy, O happiness.

The New York Times' article today said that the Pope is saying Mass at Sts. Peter and Paul on the Parkway on the morning of Saturday, September 26th, then speaking at Independence Hall at 4:30. At 7:30 p.m. he is back at the Parkway to host a show. For his motorcade to take Lombard Street from Independence Hall to the Parkway would not be out of the question. If so, he'll come right down this block and past my humble abode.

Of course, when I just now went back to the New York Times to double-check his schedule, it was no longer up. So who knows? And, just like when the president is in town, they probably will not publish the pope's route beforehand. The temporary railings do seem like a 'tell,' though. FanSee
