Not all of y'all might know that I am a musician and that music is a huge part of my life.... I love hard rock and women's rock and all kinds of music, and last night my husband and son and I went to the Fillmore, Silver Spring MD, to see amazing amazing Shirley Manson and Garbage.
Thanks so much to
ciann -- we did not manage to connect, because I am super disorganized, but it was thanks to her post that I found out about the show in time to get tickets.
It was AWESOME!!!
My son was 12 so this was his first rock show. We were a little nervous, but he had a fantastic time too. The Garbage show was all ages, so that was cool; I think when we went to see Toadies at the 9:30 (the last rock show we went to) it was over 21 only. We all had our earplugs in and no ringing at all. Here is a very representative
youtube of what we experienced. Garbage is a bit unique in that they do this very heavy rock / punkish sound, but also do very sweet and soft things. They have a whole gamut. Shirley Manson is AMAZING, such a mesmerizing performer, and she let out that this song, Man on a Wire, is about turning 45 as a woman rocker, so I am ALL OVER THAT.
Here is drummer
Butch Vig talking about how Garbage fits into the history of alternative music, -- along with the fact that not only is Butch the drummer of Garbage, he also produced Nirvana's Nevermind. Our favorite album by Garbage is beautifulgarbage, which I think is AMAZING, and have played pretty much solid for ten years or so, but he says it was not well received which is too bad. We didn't get super into Bleed Like Me, but I predict that this show will turn that around. And here is their
homepage with a link to their recent appearance on Letterman, 17 years after they debuted there.
So I'm incredibly psyched we got to see them at the Fillmore. It's not a huge space... a little bigger than the 9:30, a bit smaller than the old Hammerjacks with not as much room on the second floor. They were in top form, we knew almost every song they played, the songs we didn't know, like Man on a Wire, were awesome, and so my son had the ideal First Rock Show. :)
Here are some of the things they played:
They opened with Supervixen. Shirley commanded "bow down to me" but we were jammed in like sardines, so we could not comply.
They sang Cherry Lips and everyone went crazy. Shirley is all about transgender rights in concert. They did not sing Androgyny (another fave or ours) or Shut your Mouth (perhaps my top fave alongside Cherry Lips). If you have ever been mansplained or silenced as a Smart Girl, Shut Your Mouth is your official theme song.
And of course they did #1 Crush, which, is like one of The Great Perfect Rock Songs.
They did Cup of Coffee, which was awesome. She kind of paces like a caged Cat when she sings these slower songs.
I think they did Bad Boyfriend. And they did The Trick is to Keep Breathing.
And yes, Bleed Like Me. It was very good. And of course Only Happy When it Rains, which everyone was totally singing along with. And When I Grow Up, that was very hot in the club. There were a good mix of people older and younger (I'm 44, and I was seeing faces of my vintage and also 20 somethings, plus a good mixed crowd of men, women, and all persuasions of couples-- it was great).
They did I think I'm Paranoid, and they had a very awesome red tee shirt with a nifty artwork of it that we bought. Plus, I caught a pick from a Roadie!!! Which I am just about to make into a necklace. :)
Sadly they did not do "The World is Not Enough" -- ha ha! I wonder if you have to get special permissions to perform Bond songs.
Encores were Stupid Girl (I kind of counted on that), Push It, and a softer one which I think is newish. I am so getting the new album asap:
OMG, it was one of those fabulous rock shows. Sigh, so happy of it!!! I highly encourage you to see them if you like Garbage, there should be no fear that they have fallen off. They were not weak, AT ALL. They were totally in top form. Shirley ran the stage like a goddess. She was awesome.
My husband managed to get a few good shots with our Canon Powershot. I'll try to upload the best next.
ALL THE YAY!!!!
