The end of the year is fast approaching, and I’ve started thinking about my game plan for 2008.
2007 was an interesting year. I got my first book contract (woohoo) and experienced major writer’s block after said contract. I spent entirely too much time playing video games, and as a result, I only wrote two books. Yep, just two. Which is fast for some people, but the year before I wrote nearly 4, so to me it feels unproductive.
I’m excessively fond of lists, so I’ve already started mapping out what I want to work on for the new year:
1 - Book currently in progress sitting at 55k. Finish this and sub to agent.
2 - Book waiting patiently for revisions. Currently 70k. Finish revisions and sub to agent if happy with it. If not, revise again.
3 - Write Book #3 of my series (if I get the go-ahead)
4 - Write sequel to mystery project (if I get the go-ahead)
5 - Write idea festering in my head (in genre)
6 - Write other idea festering in my head (not in genre)
Granted, I might not get to all of them. I might not even sub all of them to my agent (who currently has two projects of mine at hand). But to me, it’s important to keep the output going and to keep constantly producing new things. Not only does it make me feel more like a professional, but it also makes me a lot more stable and easy to live with. No project on deck? Jill is a cranky, cranky girl.
Michelle Rowen has a great blog and she’s been discussing her 2008 plans. For her markets, she believes that you need to produce 3 books a year to stay competitive. Everyone might not agree with that, but I do admire her work ethic and her determination.
Her project discussion fueled mine. So I’m wondering, has anyone else given thought to 2008 yet?
