Hi all-
This is
Ceylonna, bringing you Fan Girl Friday for March 14th. In general I tend to be a fan of authors more than just specific stories. For the sake of the tour, I'm choosing a story (or two) from some of my favorite authors, but I encourage you to check out the other things they have written. The authors I read tend to be very good at characterization, so consider trying some of the stories even if they aren't in your chosen fandom. A lot of the stories I'm reccing are AU, so the intro wikipedia entries to the series are more than enough to get you going. Enjoy!
Vathara's
Blade's of Blood is a fantastic Rurouni Kenshin/Nightlife crossover. While many fics do a split Battousai/Kenshin split personality badly, Vathara pulls this one off. In this fic the personalities are seperate -- Kenshin is a mild mannered shop keeper who has accidently acquired the spirit sword Battousai. The sequel to this story is
Witchy Woman, and I hope she writes more. (rated T/M. Cannon pairings when relevant.)
Ravyn (
quoth_the_ravyn) an author I've been following for a long time. Her
stories are great, but I'm really impressed with her drabbles. One drabble series she's been writting is the
Mob Drabble, where Kenshin is a mob assassin. Note that you need to read the posts in the reverse order they are listed in the link. (K/K, rated M-ish). She also writes good smut, which is available at the
Moon.
Continuing with Rurouni Kenshin fics,
Jane Drew's
Frozen Moonlight is a well written, suspenseful piece of work that I hope she finishes soon. I won't risk spoiling it with a description. (rated T.)
Another Rurouni Kenshin author I enjoy is
Veles. She writes some AU serial drabbles. Her
Siege series is a fun story of how Kaoru and Kenshin get together.
Bliss contains some very humorous pieces of them as parents.
Also in RK,
Indygodusk's
Hakama Dake, a steamy K/K piece set within the series. Rated M.
For a RK/Highland crossover check out
L.Mouse's
A Life Lived, where Kenshin is an immortal. The story line is interwoven with some of her other pieces, so look at the other things she has written.
Moving on to other fandoms,
SGCbear cub writes in several. I generally don't read Harry Potter, but I gave her
Spellcaster a try and I'm hooked. (Hermione/Snape, rated M). I originally found her by her Labyrinth Fanfiction,
Sharp Edge of Dreams. (Sara/Jareth, rated M). It's good, though the plot gets confusing at times. The sequel
Child of Fire is better. I also enjoy her SG-1 fics. Try
Monkey Screaming, for instance.
Also in SG-1 is
dietcokechic's
Barista series. A look at SG-1 through the eye's of Daniel's barista.
For those who watch Gokusen, check out
30 Kisses, by
MoonKlutz. (Sawada/Yankumi, Rated T.)
In Inuyasha, there the fantastic (but unfinished) work
Turnabout is Fair Play by
Ookami-chan. (Inu/Kag, Rated M).
Also, unfinished (but still being updated) is
Fenikkusuken's Phoenix Blade. (Inu/Kag, rated M.) She also writes good smutlettes, if that's your thing.
My favorite Inuyasha fic doesn't really require much knowlege of the series (I should know, since I've never seen it.) My all time favorite is definitely
Lucky One's, a Inu/Kag fic. It does contain explicit content, but those chapters are marked for those who don't want to read it. There's a sequel in progress as well.
And two last pieces that I fan girl, even if they are not exactly fanfiction.
Tales of MU is an ongoing work of fantasy fiction that explores issues of prejudice and sexuality. Warning: there is heavy sexual content of a variety of kinds, but it is well incorporated into the plot.
The
Broadway Bound Series originally started off as an Inuyasha fic, but the author decided (wisely) to redo it as an original fic. It's nicely done.
Whew! That's a lot to write up, even though I know I had more on my list. Hope you enjoy some of these as much as I've enjoyed many of the recs so far.
