Japan Roll Call

Mar 20, 2011 12:45

My relatives in Yokosuka are safe and flew out to the Philippines yesterday. Military dependents are being evacuated to wherever they can get a ticket to.

Greater Nagoya Area
The Pasion/Nakao family is safe. Ami's dad got stuck on the Shinkansen on his way back from Kyushu but eventually took local trains and made his way home. Adam and Ami explained what happened to their 3 year old son and he went to the grocery store and donated what he had in his wallet.

No big details, but both Maiko's and Sachi's families are safe.

Kansai
My boss from when I worked at Santek, Kaz (a Kobe native), sent me a message saying his family is safe.

Sayo (another Kobe native) reported the same.

I've talked to M-san (a regular at the library) in person and via e-mail and she said her relatives are okay. Her husband was in South Korea for business and was supposed to fly to Japan on the 12th. As of wednesday night, he was Taiwan, waiting for a flight home.

Mina (working in Kobe) was one of the first people I heard from and she said that she was okay and reported that her family in Narita was safe. She reminded me that our friend Yukari worked in a Tokyo TV studio and expressed genuine concern for her safety (Ami's initial reaction to our concern for her was "I would never worry about Yukari. She is a monster." It's true, she can definitely take care of herself).

Yukari later got in contact with people and reported that she was safe.

Greater Tokyo area (including Yokohama and Chiba)
T-chan is safe (I reported this to the owner of Clover and she let out a sigh of relief. Since she's the only former employee that tries to keep in contact with her, she worries about her quite a bit). It took her a few hours to walk home from work.

Tsumagari-senpai and family are also okay. She also had quite the hike home.

Kobame, an employee for the Tokyo Electric Power Company, is safe, but understandably exhausted.

Pei Pei (Yumi's sister), Fusa and their respective families are okay, though Pei Pei is still pretty shook up.

The earthquake woke Jon up from a nap - he is safe and currently in HK.

No details or direct contact, but KamoreKaori and the Supa 7 girls are seemingly okay.

China commented that everything was fine in her area.

Other/Unknown locations
Keni reported that her family is okay, but one of their friends lost their home and they haven't been able to get in contact with them.

Hiromi sent a short message saying that her family and friends haven't had any difficulties.

Kanta was surprised to hear from me and reported that he was safe.

The Aono family (who's shop I worked in for about a week in 2007) moved back to Japan at the end of last summer. I wasn't able to attend their going away party and I assumed that they forgot about me. Still, I got an e-mail response from the dad, saying that they were safe.

Atsuko-sensei was happy that I remembered and thought of her after all these years and said that her family in Japan is safe. I never actually took her class but she would come into our shodo class every once in a while or be in the office whenever I had to talk to Minato-sensei (who's contact information I no longer have, unfortunately) about a project.

Koichi (a former Santek colleague) said that his cousins lost their home, but other than that, everyone in his family is safe. Asami, another former Clover employee and one of Koichi's friends from high school, was another person that was surprised that I thought of her and her family and said that they are all okay.

Naomi sent me a message saying that her family in Hokkaido wasn't affected.

That's pretty much everybody I tried to get in touch with, I think. It's hard to be too happy because so many people are suffering right now, but I'm relieved that my family and friends are safe.
