Hermione forgot to return the key when she decided to move out of the flat she shared with Draco. At first she felt silly about forgetting, but soon realized she left a few things behind. Good thing she had the key or she might have had to speak to Draco on the matter. Now she could simply get her things and be on her way. The relationship had ended on good terms thanks to the unusual insight they have into each other - something that grew out of their friendship. It hadn't been a good match in the end. They knew it was better to remain friends, but that was a complicated situation and neither wanted to make it worse by fueling the love that remained.

The first place she searched for her old books was the living room. They weren't there. She entered the bedroom - his bedroom - to look. She remember when it used to be their shared bedroom. It had once been two separate bedrooms, but as soon as they got together they combined it into one and that's how it stayed after her departure. She started searching in the closet when she heard his voice. She quickly entered the closet and shut the door behind her.

"Could we please talk for a moment? There's something I'd like to discuss with you," Draco said.

"Of course," replied Astoria.

They sat on the bed. Hermione knew this because she recognized the slight creak it made every time someone sat or laid down on it. She had to fight back the memories that were flooding her mind.

"This isn't easy, but you have to know that I want a relationship, it just isn't the right time for it."

"I'll wait. I don't care how long it takes. I've waited this long, haven't I? Do you remember what I told you when you were with her?

"Yes."

"I still feel that way. I have a feeling I always will."

Hermione didn't know what to think. All she could focus on was the musk of his cologne. It clung to the clothes above her head. It wasn't strong, but it was bold with its crisp freshness. Every time he wore it on their dates she liked getting extra close so she could truly enjoy it. That's when she noticed her old books jutting out from an old shoe box.

"How did they find their way here?" she mumbled lowly to herself.

She continued to look around and saw Draco's favorite suit jacket. She wondered when he wore it last. She was surprised he wasn't wearing it now. Another slight creak let her know someone had stood up. She could hear the soft paces the person was taking in front of the closet door.

"Don't make me regret talking to you about the possibility of..."

"There's no need to mention it. We will never have to discuss this until we sign the necessary paperwork."

"How soon can we do that?"

The smell of his cologne was giving her a headache. She pinched the skin between her thumb and index fingers hoping this would release some of the pressure. The faint scent of lilac filled the air as she discovered the periwinkle scarf she had been searching for. She thought she had packed it, but was obviously wrong. She held it up to her nose and noticed it didn't smell right. It had been taken outside at some point. This both confused and annoyed her. She couldn't figure out how this happened? Had Draco taken it with the intention of bringing her back or at the very least seeing her in the flat again?

"Look I don't want to wait any longer. You can have the flat. I have too many memories here, Astoria. If you think you can accumulate the funds in time," he explained.

"Of course. Miles and I need a place to live before we decide to tie the knot. It's a shame you don't want to go with Morag. I think the two of you would get along well."

"Do I need to have someone with me at the wedding?"

"No, but I'd like you to be part of the wedding party and Morag is the only one without a partner."

"I'll think about it."

"Please do."

"Don't push me into the arms of a new woman or I may regret ever being friends with you."

There was another slight creak and then silence. Once they were gone Hermione grabbed her things and decided to leave the spare key on Draco's dresser. There was nothing left connecting them, but memories. She didn't mind.
