It was the anniversary of her mother’s death and as usual she was preparing to take the day off from her work at the Ministry to properly mourn this day. That’s when he flooed her.
“Spinnet! I didn’t give you permission to take the day off,” growled, Miles Bletchley, her new supervisor. Ever since she had been promoted to advertiser for the Department of Magical Games and Sports, Miles was giving her a hard time. He treated her as though she were incompetent and only made it through based on her looks. There were many ways to get to the top at the Ministry and unfortunately that was one of the ways.
Alicia felt indignant at the accusation because she knew she had made it to this new position based on her hard work and passion. Miles continued to harass her every moment regardless because he didn’t have anything better to do with his time.
“Sir, with all due respect I don’t need your permission to take day off,” Alicia replied calmly.
“Why the hell not?”
“I’ve already asked the Head of the Department and he granted me permission. If you have any problems with that I’m sure the Head will be more than happy to discuss it with you.”
Miles muttered something under his breath before his head disappeared from the flames. Alicia smiled to herself feeling good about putting one over on Miles for once. She would’ve told him about his mother’s death if he had asked, but he hadn’t. A part of her wanted to rub it in his face so he would feel bad about giving her such a hard time on a day like this. She knew it wasn’t right, but he wasn’t the nicest bloke in the world so nice wasn’t necessary. The longer she was alone, the more despair she felt. It had been creeping up to her all these years and finally it was threatening to consume her. At least she had the day off and no one could take that away from her.
