When Koby sees Lady Alvida strike his savior with her iron mace, his heart nearly stops, because he's never seen anyone survive a hit from the deadly weapon before.
no no no luffy no no no this isn't right he wants to be the king of pirates and he has to reach that goal he just has to because that determination and desire can bring him anywhere he wants to go--
Koby screams at the top of his lungs and can already feel the tears streaming down his face when it's still only the beginning. All that flashes through his fragile mind is the thought that, with all of Lady Alvida's rage and with all of her power, Luffy will surely die. All he can believe is that he'll have to witness that twisted, sick smile on her face as she stares at the boy with the straw hat lie in an endless sea of blood, as she gazes at another life that dares to defy her and all that she stands for. All he can imagine is the same exact ending for him and all he can imagine is him in Hell, apologizing over and over again to Luffy, who can't hear anyway because he's in Heaven when he should be sailing on the water and finding his crew.
please don't die luffy please don't take that dream away from him lady alvida i'll do anything i'll do anything at all because he's the only one who has given me some kind of chance--
And when Koby sees that giant smirk on Luffy's face and when he sees him punch Lady Alvida with every bit of strength he has, all of that is swiftly replaced by even more shock and terror. Luffy's alive and breathing and speaking and moving and it's all so very unreal, but he can't be too astonished--because the boy's already surprised him with more than he can count, and so, his thoughts soon shift to what's going to happen to them now. He knows Luffy's journey is going to consist of already, but his own future is finally in his hands, because he's free and he's no longer anchored to the cruel tides of fate, and it's so new to him he's not sure what to do next.

For Luffy, Koby decides to keep the dream of joining the Navy alive. For Luffy, he tells himself that he'll be helpful in any way he can until they go their separate ways. For Luffy, he vows that this is the last time he'll ever see Lady Alvida and her iron mace.
