Sentimental Scar
The scar that he had received so very long ago still aches every time he closes his eyes. The scar that he had thought would take his life away still stings every time he blinks. The scar that made the princess cry still brings him close to tears every time he opens his eyes.

He wishes that it would just disappear and leave him alone. He wants to forget that he had ever saved her, wants to forget how persistent and stupid he was as a little boy. He never wants to remember how she had told him that she would always be his friend--because she is long gone and probably dead now, and if she's not, she's most likely starving or dying of thirst and it's all because she had deserted this pathetic wasteland that everyone calls Alabasta. If he had just left her alone all of those years ago, this kind of suffering could have been avoided and the king would have chosen a less destructive path and everyone would be happier than they are now.

But even as his back is turned on Alabasta and the princess and the king and even as he allows the hatred and the pain and the darkness to be in his life, the scar gives him hope that everything will be all right someday. He thinks that the king will declare innocence and that the rebellion he has started will stop with no regrets, with visions of the future. He dreams of the return of a speech consisting of goals and inspiration being given by someone that has seemed to have fallen off of the face of the earth, someone that was--and maybe still is, but hopefully not--the breath in his lungs.

And there's a part of him that screams that his sacrifice wasn't for nothing at all.
