Fandom Post Office, April 15 (Tuesday)

It smelled distractingly like chocolate in here today, and for no discernible reason. The thing was, it wasn't a pervasive kind of smell; it wasn't as if you could walk through the front door right into a (figurative) wall of the scent of chocolate. It was just that every now and then Éponine would catch a whiff of chocolate, and then she had to ( Read more... )

Kenzi bounced in, full of good news. Well, good news for someone.

"Éponine Éponine, guess what!"

"Must I guess?" asked Éponine, who was peering into a PO box in yet another vain attempt to pinpoint the chocolate smell. "It could be just about anything."

She straightened up and turned, leaning against the wall and giving Kenzi an assessing look. "Something good, I'll guess. Look how excited you are!"

"They're going to let me teach!" Seriously. Who knew that the faculty were *that* crazy? "...do I smell chockie?"

Éponine . . . burst out laughing. Sorry, Kenzi.

"Good lord, who made that decision?" she teased. "But you're really going to do it, then! What are you going to teach? D'you know yet?"

And then, continuing as if she'd been on this topic the whole time: "Yes, but don't bother yourself trying to find it. There's no chocolate to be had, not really."

Mean, Fandom.

Kenzi's nose was doing little sniffing moves like Anonykitty, seeking out seafood. "Awww, there has to be! I can almost... and yes!" She straightened, beaming. "Isn't that hysterical? I made it up! "Choose Your Own Adventure!""

The really new kids were in for a world of confusion.

"Really, don't trouble yourself looking. I've turned the place inside out and haven't scared up so much as one tiny piece, if you've ever heard anything as ridiculous." Éponine let a slow smirk cross her face. "And have you even got an idea what exactly you'll be teaching them from week to week?"

She wasn't judging. Making things up on the fly was an extremely useful life skill.

"How to survive? How not to get arrested? How to have fun?" Kenzi grinned wickedly. "How not to rely on me to bail 'em out?"

"Or rely on anyone but themselves, for that matter," agreed Éponine. "May as well learn sooner rather than later that the world won't do them any favors, hmm?"

"Exactly," Kenzi said approvingly. "And hey, it's summer. Like they want to learn anything academic at all. I figure I can sneak in field trips to cool places in there, under the excuse of 'learning about the world.'" She grinned at Éponine. "And if you want to show up and teach them something, you know it's cool."

Éponine snorted, as if she thought it was a preposterous idea, but she was smiling, just a bit.

"As if anyone would ever want their kids learning from the likes of me!"

Kenzi leaned over to poke her shoulder. "Like I'm more respectable and all-knowing than you are? Pfftt!" She grinned. "Seriously, you can at least tell people about Paris. And then maybe we can figure out a way to go to the modern one, see how it changed."

"All-knowing, hardly," Éponine pretended to scoff, "but respectable, yes, I think I'd be willing to put money on that. Besides, the Paris I know isn't much use to anyone else, but . . ."

She considered for a moment.

"I s'pose there's something, I just can't think of it."

"There ya go." There were weeks to go, and 'Ponine could definitely think of something before the end of the term. "And hey, you can come in and watch the class once, if you want to get ideas for yours." She sniffed. "Maybe on finding chocolate."

The problem was not so much thinking of something as getting past the low self-esteem hurdle. Besides, the things she did know and felt were useful . . . well, she didn't usually have an edge on people, so she liked to keep her few advantages.

"First I would have to find it," Éponine pointed out. "That hasn't happened yet."
