It was Castiel's third sermon, and, no, he still had no idea what he was doing ( Read more... )

Tell him how reassuring it is to discover that, in fact, nobody knows what they're doing.

Or tell him how completely not reassuring that is.

Or talk to him about anything else.

Chuck said he'd show up to a sermon, so he showed up to one. And ended up being extremely confused.

So, no different than any other time he listened to Castiel talk.

"That was, uh, interesting."

Castiel nodded. "I'm glad you thought so. Free will tends to be a very . . . complicated subject."

And Cass kinda sucked as a public speaker. Really, he should probably stick with the fire and brimstone and threatening to turn people to dust.

"Yeah, no kidding," Chuck said. If he wasn't confused about the whole thing before he walked in here, he was now. "I try not to think about it too much when I make decisions."

He didn't know which was worse; him being destined to be this much of a screw up or the fact that he constantly chose to be that way.

"It's perhaps better not to think about it constantly. It is, for mankind, entirely unprovable."

"So do you not have any free will at all?" Chuck asked.

"That . . . is the theory, yes." Castiel frowned. "It is difficult to say. I feel as though I make decisions, but as angels we are created to follow orders. It's hard to know if what I choose to do is in fact a choice, or if it is merely the ineffable will of my father."

"So you're just as confused as we are," Chuck said with a nod. That actually made him feel kind of better. Sam may have wanted angels with all the answers and gave out hugs but Chuck liked the fact that he wasn't sure of everything. Gave him something to relate to.

Castiel actually grimaced faintly. "Yes." He didn't much like admitting that. "For some time I thought that a particular character flaw of myself. But then one must take into account that even character flaws must be part of the Lord's ultimate design. . . . One hopes."

If he's just doing what God wants him to do, then he doesn't have to worry about failing. He doesn't have to think he might be about to tip over the edge Anna flung herself off of when she decided to rip out her own grace.

"It is the mystery of life. All of life, apparently."

"Any particular reason you chose such a frustrating subject to base your sermon on?"

"It seemed to come up in conversation a number of times yesterday. And I'm not certain I know enough about the events of the last weekend to address them in that format."

"Ah. That explains a lot," Chuck said, frowning. "I didn't have the pleasure of going to the scary alternate universe but I heard about some pretty disturbing things that went on there."

"So it was not everyone who transferred then?" Castiel had been getting the feeling that it was.

Chuck shook his head. "No, only a couple people actually went over. I mean, there was another me there but I didn't know anything about it until somebody told me afterward."

Castiel frowned and nodded, filing that information away alongside the "there's an alternate universe of the nexus of alternate universes" conundrum.

"Then you don't know much about the events, either," he concluded. "That is perhaps to your benefit."

"I found out enough to make me glad that I didn't go over there," he said, shrugging. "But I'm not going to mope around about it. What happened to me in another universe really isn't my concern. It's not me and it's never going to be. The fact that it's affecting people I care about is what's pissing me off."

Yes. He cared about people. Well. He cared about Sam, anyway. If you gave him time he could probably come up with a couple more people that fit in the "care about" category.
