63 Serendipity Place, Late Wednesday Afternoon

Mar 04, 2009 18:28

Matt had only just gotten in to see HA the office and if it had been set up yet. There were books to be shelved and files to be put away, but the movers had done a surprisingly good job with the furniture.

Of course, setting up the fax machine may bring a few problems, but he'd cross that bridge when he got to it.

Or after he answered his phone. )

Sarah didn't always -- or, okay, often -- actually get around to meeting new people on the island right away, but she had noticed during her jog that morning that it looked like someone was setting something up on Serendipity. And, well, she was bored.

So this was Sarah, hair done up neatly and plate of (bakery), knocking on the door at the office. "Hello?"

Turning his head toward the smell, Matt smiled faintly at another visitor. "Can I help you?"

Sarah took in the dark glasses and the cane pretty quickly; not a threat. She relaxed. "Unofficial welcome wagon," she explained. "I'm Sarah. I have a business not too far from here, and this island is small enough that I get curious whenever anyone new is moving in. I brought cookies." Though not, as her last ping had indicated, an entire bakery, WTF.

"I really am in a small town, aren't I?" Matt replied, offering a hand in her direction to shake.

"It's tiny," Sarah said, almost apologetically. "I was in L.A. before here. I'm still not used to everyone knowing everyone."

And, she thought, she could live without that aspect.

She took the hand, placing the cookies on a nearby table. "What kind of office are you setting up?"

"A legal aid," He replied, shaking her hand firmly. "But why do I get the feeling I won't have too much business here?"

Sarah couldn't dispute that assessment, but she forced brightness into her voice. "Oh, I don't know about that," she said. "Going by radio, half the students on the cruise got married. Getting them divorced has to be a good week's work."

"Students getting divorced and aliens?"

Sarah blinked. "So someone already told you about some of the island's more unusual residents," she said, keeping her tone calm. "I'm from Earth, by the way."

"Thank god for that," Matt replied, chuckling a little as that was confirmed. Unless everyone here suffered from the same delusions, at least...

"And can I assume you'd say the same?" Sarah gently persisted.

"Yes, New York actually. Hells Kitchen."

"Civilization," Sarah said appreciatively. "So what brings you to the island?"

"Just... a small sabbatical from my law firm." now that the Kingpin was off the streets.

"A working vacation," Sarah nodded. "It's not a bad place to be, if you want a complete break from everything."

She was curious if he was out on his own, given what seemed to be an obvious disability, but there wasn't a polite way to ask that just yet.

"People seem friendly," He said, nodding in agreement. "If you ignore my landlord's version of a greeting."
