Now that she had redecorating plans in mind and apparently an offer of help from A.J., Lacey was in a bit of a better mood as she bustled around the diner

Much to Lacey's relief, no matter how slovenly Yitzhak had gotten about a lot of things around here the coffee had been good. She didn't know how she would have handled things if she'd had bad coffee to deal with.
She brightened a little at the prospect of getting to bestow some of said good coffee on a customer and smiled at Ferris as she came over with a mug and a carafe fresh from the brewer. "There you go," she said, filling the mug and setting it in front of him. "Anything else I can get you?"

"Oh." Lacey, who hadn't yet had a chance to sample everything on the menu, smiled a little too brightly and did a strange little shimmy that probably screamed 'oh hai lookit me BSing.' "Everything's good, really. But the burgers, those are really good."
She wasn't actually lying about the burgers, but the tone of voice hadn't changed either.
Ferris glanced off to the side with a raised eyebrow, then turned his attention back to Lacey a moment later. "Sure, I'll have a burger. Are you new around here? I don't think I've seen you before." Not that he was a regular customer or anything, but it was a tried and true ice breaker.

It was indeed a tried and true ice breaker, and Lacey was not exactly skilled in the ways of conversational tactics no matter what she might say to the contrary.
She handed the order slip to one of the kitchen boys and turned back to Ferris with a shrug. "Pretty much, yeah. I've only been in town a couple of weeks, and I just took over the diner on Monday."
"Well then, might I say welcome to Fandom. It's not much and it's not home, but it's certainly an interesting place to be. Have you seen much of the island?"
It was a small island. There wasn't a lot to see geographically. Fandom made up for it in other ways.
"You should explore," Ferris implored. "There are plenty of little streets to wander through. The people are friendly and there's a great bar down near the edge of town and I have to say, the day spa is well worth a day off." Not that Ferris had any qualms about taking the day off.
"You have the local privilege of having your very own day spa right here down the road. Somewhere. I'm sure there's a map. There's also a bowling alley, go kart course and mini golf. I don't understand why, but we do."

"Wow. Not exactly the sort of small-town amenities I'd expect," Lacey said, blinking a bit. "Have you tried any of those places? Anything you recommend to help a newbie out?"

"Mini-golf, huh? I haven't played that in a while --" that, she could blame on never wanting to be at the mini-golf course in Dog River when Oscar was there -- "but I'm not bad at it."
[Flash-cut to Lacey standing on a threadbare Astro-Turf patch in front of a windmill, shuffling her feet, twitching a lot, and squinting down at the golf ball.
LACEY (yelling): Fore!]
[Flash-cut to an elderly woman knitting placidly in an armchair as, with a crash of broken glass, a golf club goes flying past her.
