What does that even mean? I can barely remember that scene... were the crocodiles planning to eat the hippos? Am I correct in remembering that one of the crocs tried to catch one of the hippos and was flattened? Were there ostriches involved?

Ehhh. My interpretation has always been that the crocodiles' interest in the hippos (etc.) was... romantic, shall we say? And forceful. It's a little uncomfortable on a rewatch... or maybe they intended to eat them. I'm honestly not sure which is worse.

Aside from that you are correct on both counts, there are ostriches and one of the crocodiles is indeed flattened. :3

The entire scene is actually based on an opera from which the segment is taken from, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Gioconda_(opera)

Ben Ali Gator's interest in Hyacinth Hippo IS romantic. Though he's probably the only one who got romantic pursuit right in there.

I shipped them so hard as a kid.

Still do.

You know, it's one of the only examples I can think of of a pudgy, unidealized female getting a thin, good-looking(?) male (who is pretty buff, considering how he dances with her). Though of course the stalkery-ness/nonconsensual vore could be considered problematic.

What does that even mean.

This. I thought the crocs were trying to eat the hippos, not date them.

I have always thought they were trying to seduce them... I mean they were ballroom dancing!

I always thought it was a ruse to lull them into a false sense of security before eating them. All the girl hippos seemed scared at one point if memory serves.

I have always seen it as sexual/romantic thing... or I think I have, maybe my adult perception is colouring my memories.
Tbh your way makes more sense.

That segment is based upon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Gioconda_(opera) with the Hippo representing Laura Adorno, and Ben Ali Gator representing Enzo Grimaldo.

Looking back on that now, I can't help but chuckle as I remember this-

The mostly deadly animal in Africa is the Hippo, not the Crocodile. "For the female of the species is more deadly than the male."

I wonder if Disney intended that?

The body shape dynamic, or their penchant for playing 'Chase?'

God I hope not. The whole "I'll change my no to yes, if you just try hard enough" thing? I mean I know she wants to be chased, hence that over the shoulder "come hither" which is supposed to counter-act the whole "I'm mad at you, don't follow me" glare... Ugh. I hate the double message crap that's supposed to be going on.
