When Scotty's days are numbered, he contacts old friends. Most of them stay on the line for a while and reminisce, and then they say goodbye and wish him well. He has one steady visitor, though, the half-Vulcan to who time has endowed with a look of wisdom that matches his actual knowledge.
Spock talks with Scotty about physics: about new engine systems and trans-warp beaming and about temporal anomalies that might just result in what might traditionally be called an 'afterlife'. They are used to working together, the old Science Officer and Chief Engineer.
"Is there no one else you wish to see?" Spock asks, when he offers to leave and is asked not to.
"My life was the Enterprise and her crew, Mister Spock, and that leaves you the biggest part of if I've got left 'round here."
A nod and a touch of hand to hand acknowledge the revelation. Having spoken his piece, Scotty slips off under the soft comfort of companionship.
