Sixth floor kitchen- Wednesday late morning and afternoon

Nov 23, 2011 09:00

Today seemed to be a busy day for a lot of things, but Annie hoped people would show up for today's cooking extravaganza for tomorrow's Thanksgiving feast. When she wasn't in class, Annie was here, getting things set up or trying something from a recipe book. Cooking was easy, right? You just put stuff together according to directions. Nothing hard ( Read more... )

Quinn was at work most of the day, but she slipped upstairs during a late break and surveyed the ingredients with satisfaction as she started assembling ingredients for a green bean casserole.

"I'm glad we have everything," she said with satisfaction. "Gunther at the hotel is improvising with canned tuna and dehydrated milk."

"That sounds pretty avant garde for Thanksgiving," Annie decided. "Why's he improvising?"

"Our supply trucks are having a hard time finding the causeway," Quinn explained. "There's plenty of stuff stored up, but it's not exactly pilgrim-traditional."

"Ugh. I went out this morning thinking Turtle and Canary would be out of the good stuff by now, and it was such a pain getting back," Annie complained. "I'm pretty sure it shouldn't take half an hour to get back into town."

"Seriously?" Quinn stared at Annie. "What happened when you tried?"

"I'd just get turned around and end up a few steps back," she said. "If I wasn't so determined to get back I probably would have given up after the first twenty times or so."

"I would have quit trying," Quinn admitted. "You might be braver than I am."

"I wasn't really looking forward to being stuck on the mainland with a bunch of stuff for Thanksgiving and no access to my room," Annie explained.

"It's not a great time to try to get home," Quinn had to agree. "I mean, you could try to pay for a ride in turkey, but ... probably a worse idea."

"Well, that sounds fairly horrifying," Petra said. "And I've had meals that involved grubs and bulrushes."

"It's what's in the pantry," Quinn explained. "He's trying to figure out what to do to feed the guests tomorrow if the supply trucks still can't get through."

She gave Petra a skeptical look. "Why bulrushes? As in Moses and?"

"Is something wrong with the road?" Petra asked, concerned. "It's a causeway, right, not like a bridge?"

She waved one hand vaguely in a 'no big' sort of way and said, "I was stranded on a deserted island for a while." Like six weeks. "There was coconut and fish, too, but it took a while to get the fishing thing figured out, you know?"

"Yeah, but they said they couldn't find it," Quinn said quietly, quickly. She didn't want everybody to freak out. "Hopefully it's just a bunch of really stupid delivery guys."

She went to find a can opener. "We might need your desert island skills before long, if it's not."

"Well, that sucks," Petra said. "I'm sure it'll all get straightened out soon, though. And, sure. What do you want to learn first?" she asked, only half-joking. "How to build a desalination still or how to catch fish with a straightening iron?"

"Straightening iron," Quinn said instantly. "The other one is all practical, but that's just bizarre."

"And yet, if you're ever stranded on a deserted island with only the contents of your suitcase you were traveling to a beauty pageant with, it's totally critical," Petra told her. "At least until we figured out enough smelting to make fish hooks out of our jewelry." She flashed Quinn a wry little smile and said, "I wish I was making any of this up."
