Third Floor Common Room / January 16 / Morning

Jan 16, 2010 23:32

Azula with her left cheek stinging woke to the cold. It was cold and dark and when she attempted to open the light fixtures no light came on. Azula went out to investigate. The outside world was blanketed in snow, she moved to the common room and found a fireplace. A surprise since there was none before. There was, Azula concluded, no use ( Read more... )

Liir had figured out the moment he woke up in his room that something was different. The room had been cold, dark...

It had felt almost like home, as pathetic as that sounded.

A quick look out his window had confirmed his suspicions and taking Makejoy for her walk had cinched things thoroughly: they were once more in the midst of a 'blackout' and the fireplaces were back. He couldn't say he was happy about this turn of events, as there was a certain amount of ease that the modern conveniences he'd grown used to provided, but he wasn't nearly as dismayed as he could have been. Instead, he was thankful that his small store of water would prove useful and, Makejoy padding behind him, he decided to be just the same upon returning.

That was why he brought out a few supplies and started preparing pancakes over the fire. It might look as if he'd be burned, but the trick to reaching into a fire was one of the first little bits of magic Glinda had taught him. That didn't mean it didn't look odd.

As he didn't much know Azula, he gave her a nod and a faint smile before holding up the first pan of food.

"Would you care for some breakfast?"

"I'd care for some," Azula said, she had been watching him cook the scent of food caught her interest quickly but he did something with the fire and that interested Azula more. "Did you do something with the fire?"

He shrugged.

"Not sure if I do it to the fire or to me," he admitted, hand cheerfully sticking right in the flames to finish off the pancakes and bacon.

The magic Glinda had taught him worked differently from what he'd learned on his own, but he seemed to be able to do both and so he didn't think on it too hard. Well, no more hard than he thought on anything.

"Could you bring a plate over? I forgot that one small detail."

Azula wasn't partial to being ordered around, not by anyone not her father but she could make adjustments, especially if, in the end, it would benefit her. She took the plate and passed it to him.

"Is it magic or an ability?"

...if he ever thought anyone took anything he said as anything more than a request, Liir would probably fall over laughing.

"Magic," he answered, taking the plate and sliding the pancakes into a neat little pile. No eggs; he was only using one pan and they had a terrible tendency to slide around.

"There's syrup in the pantry over to the right there, if you'd like some. I made them with a touch of sweetness, though, so best taste before you add anything."

"I'd probably add in something to spice it up." She took back the plate and tasted it. "Yes, a little more spice." Azula took Tabasco and added it in her pancakes.

"And that's what you can do with fire? Be impervious to it?" She was a little impressed. Even the best firebenders can be affected by fire.

He turned from her and considered the flames.

"I suppose so. I might be able to do more, but I've never done much with fire. My... education on the matter has been in any number of pieces and most of them jumbled up. It's useful enough, though."

"Yes, quite useful, you can cook with it," Azula replied, the corners of her mouth were turned up. "I'm Princess Azula."

He was terribly tempted. Terribly, really terribly tempted. He wasn't sure if he should, because the title seemed as if it shouldn't belong to him. Not because he wasn't Fiyero's son but because no one like him should ever have the perfectly legitimate right to call themself a prince.

But she'd been here a while, he'd seen her, and she was still putting it to her name. He settled on a compromise between what felt utterly ridiculous and the slight irritation he always felt in situations like this.

"Prince Liir, by all technicality, and Eminent Thropp. There's not a soul here who calls me by any of that, though, so Liir serves."

"Then Liir will do." Azula didn't have a problem with that, she didn't know what he meant by technicality. You were royal born or not at all. "I also answer to just Azula."

That eased some of the starch that'd started going up his spine about titles.

"A pleasure, Azula. A shame we haven't really spoken before now. I don't get out much, I admit."

"The same, only in my case, I keep getting summoned home by my brother." And because he was another royal, diplomacy was in order. Also, Azula was a believer in, what was the phrase in this world? Quid pro quo. "Would you like some tea?"

He perked up visibly at the offer.

"I would, yes. Let me just get a plate for myself and a bit of bacon done up for Makejoy, and I'd appreciate it quite a bit. Thank you."

The dog padded over to investigate her then, a massive black Newfoundland with a sweet demeanor.

Azula eyed the creature, not wary but observing. She was confident she could do something if it proved to be dangerous.

She poured Liir an extra cup. "Its green tea, highest quality."

There were some advantage to having a tea obsessed uncle.

He bowed his head in thanks.

"It smells lovely from here," he said.

...and Makejoy tilted her head at the girl. Dangerous? Only if she attacked Liir. The dog was friendly to just about everyone, as the wagging tail could attest to. She sat politely near Azula and looked up for pettings.

...which she was not going to get. Azula was not into pettings. As long as it didn't attack or slobber on her Azula was content to let it sit and do whatever it wanted to do.

"And tastes even better." She took a bite from the pancake and eyed the creature again. "What manner of creature is this?"
