Returning from the library, Leto wandered into the common room. He made himself a large cup of spice coffee, then sat down on the couch, picking up the TV remote and examining it.

"Morning, Leto," Arthur greeted. He shot a distrustful glance at the remote in his hands. "Careful."

"Morning." Leto didn't seem to pay much attention to Arthur's warning. The TV screen was suddenly turned on, revealing loud music and people dancing.

He'd been warned about the play-in-a-box, of course, but the reality of it still made him start in his seat. Uncomfortable was not simply a word or an emotion: it fairly covered his entire state of mind. "Make it go away."

Leto pressed another button, but that only resulted in a change on the screen. There were now two people talking.

"I haven't tried this before," Leto said, examining the remote further.

Leto shrugged and put the remote control on the couch next to him.

The TV was still displaying talking people.

Aaaand that would be a kitten, wriggling free from Dinah, and going off to explore the new person. By attacking his shoes. "Mrrrrrr."

"Camille, no," Dinah said, reaching over to try and grab her cat. Camille eluded her and hid behind Leto's ankles. "Sorry!"

"Ouch!" There was a small creature attacking him and he quickly reached out to grab the perpetrator. Holding it by the scruff of its neck, Leto found it was a kitten. He hissed at it, then placed the small thing on the couch beside him.

Looking up at the girl, he raised an eyebrow. "Your pet?"

Camille had given him a wide-eyed look at the hissing, then crouched on the cushions, watching him warily. Dinah facepalmed. "Yes. She's new. I just got her Thursday, she's still getting used to this place." She sighed and reached out to stroke Camille's fur. "I don't want her wandering away while she's so little. But I think she's getting bored with my room."

"Is she looking for prey?" Leto asked. There were hardly any cats on Arrakis - this was the first one he had seen.

"She's looking for adventure, I think," Dinah said, looking up, then swallowing, because wow, exotic and cute. She turned pink, and cleared her throat a little. "I fed her this morning, but she's been stuck in my room for two days, and I think she was bored with it. Even though I got her a hundred cat toys, almost."

Noticing the blush, Leto smiled. "I know little of cats, so I'm of no help there," he said, then added: "We haven't met. I'm Leto Atreides."

"Dinah. Lance. Hi." Dinah got a little of her composure back, and wrinkled her nose in curiosity. "Really? Not too many cats where you're from?" She reached out to scratch under Camille's chin, and the kitten closed her eyes, purring happily. "She likes having the spot behind her ears scratched too. They're great pets. My roomie has one, and so does his boyfriend." Never mind that Galliano was insane, and Prince Oscar Pedro was the most royal thing on the planet.

"Arrakis is a rather harsh planet," he said. "But by the sound of it I am to expect to see more cats. Where are you from." He gestured for her to take a seat next to him.

"New Gotham City. Which is a city here on the east coast and did you say planet? Really? Is that why your eyes are all blue like that? Are you an alien?" Dinah barely took a breath, then turned red as she climbed up on the couch, and picked up Camille to hold her in her lap. "Sorry, that was rude. I love hearing about all the new stuff here."
