Karal was minus his menagerie this morning. Evey and Altra were off in the preserve, Trenor was in the stable where he belonged, and Vashti was sleeping inside

"I had to step over bugs this morning on my way out of my cabin," Gavin said by way of greeting. "And they started following me!"

Karal, who was staying away from the log of spidery doom, recognised Gavin's voice and turned in his direction. "There's a spider of doom over there somewhere!" He waved his hand towards the log, which still had a rather large lump of sulking spider on it. "It would have climbed on me if Seely hadn't warned me!"

"Spider of doom?" Gavin shuddered. "It doesn't talk, does it?"

"Sunlord, I hope not!" He bent down and started scratching his foot. "But I'm itchy. I think it walked on my foot and now it's itchy."

"Where's Altra at?" Gavin wondered. "I thought he'd be here to scare these things off."

[vkandis_son]

"Evey wanted to walk through the preserve, and I wanted to spend some time alone this morning, so Altra went with her," he replied. scratching his foot even more. "They were both humouring me, but if there are spiders of doom, I'm just as happy he's with her."

"You wanted to spend time alone and yet you're entertaining the company of a large spider," Gavin teased. "Maybe it likes you too."

"I didn't invite it!" he protested. "I couldn't even see it!"

"It must have been attracted to your good looks," Gavin teased. "Not even creepy crawlers can keep away!"

[vkandis_son]

"Gavin!" he spluttered. "I do not attract spiders!"

[sixstandingby]

"But." Gavin looked sad even if Karal couldn't see him. "You attracted meeeeeeeeee."

He frowned deeply and waved a finger in Gavin's general direction. "You're not a spider, so it doesn't count."

"Don't jinx me, Karal," Gavin said. "The last time you talked about animals, sheep invaded."

[vkandis_son]

"I'm not looking after you if you turn into a giant spider!" Except he totally would. "And the sheep were not my fault," he added in an unconvincing mutter.

"There were so!" Gavin exclaimed. "It's like you called them from...the sheep homeland or something!"

"Well, yes, all right," he grumbled. "The sheep were my fault. But not the spiders!"
