Second Floor CR, Tuesday Night

Jun 17, 2008 21:10

Ella needed to mend the blouse she had torn the week before, but she was too bored and restless to stay in her room. She took it and her little sewing kit out to the common room and perched on the couch, frowning at her needle and thread. The fact she knew how to sew from her time at finishing school didn't make it any fun at all.

Blair was passing by and saw Ella. She decided to come in and make herself comfortable.

"You sew?"

There was no judgement there. Blair was merely gathering information.

There was a muttered ow -- another needle jab -- before Ella blinked and turned to look at Blair. "Not well," she said ruefully. "They made us practice at finishing school. I tore my blouse last week and thought I'd mend it myself."

"And hello."

"You need new clothes," Blair told her, ignoring the hello since they were already talking and therefore clearly beyond that stage. She looked Ella over. "We're not the same size, but I can probably get my hands on some samples that might fit you. Do you do tailoring?"

"I probably do," Ella had to acknowlege. "I got some more modern things in a handwavy manner, but I suppose I'm more comfortable with the stuff from home."

She frowned. "You mean hemming and such? I could try. Most of what I know is more like embroidery, knitting, all of that." Nothing useful; that would be against the point of finishing school.

"I suppose we could get a tailor too if needed," Blair said. "But you do do mending?"

"I can, for myself," Ella said warily, not sure where this was going. "I have no idea how people are seamstresses -- it's such fiddly work."

"It never hurts to have someone you trust in case of couture emergency," Blair said. "Not that you'd wear the same outfit twice, but still..."

Ella boggled a little; wearing something only once, except a ballgown, was not a principle that she had been taught, and it sounded wasteful. "Do you mean for dances and such, or everyday clothes too?" she asked cautiously.

"Mostly parties and events," Blair said. Granted back home those were everyday. "You wouldn't want to rewear an outfit that made the society pages. That's a sure way to never make them again."

"That's much the same as at home," Ella mused. "Not that we have society pages exactly, but it wouldn't do to wear the same gown to different balls. One would look ... poor, or cheap, or the like, and people would talk."

"Exactly," Blair said. "You might as well give up right then and there. Move to some other country and don't bother coming back."

It was very hard to resist teasing Blair when she got like this.

"Perhaps start wearing masks," Ella suggested solemnly. "You would want to hide your face in public, after all."

"Don't even go out in public," Blair said. "Spare us all the agony."

Ella looked to the side, considering this. "Maybe you could leave with a more stylish person, if you promised to only go to the shop and back," she suggested. "Or, rather, only to return with better clothing."

"I don't know anyone who could pull it off," Blair said. "Not even me, but of course I wouldn't be caught dead in those circumstances."

"I would say I was possessed," Ella claimed, laughter in her eyes. "An evil fairy forced me to go out in the gown from the night before, please forgive me."
