Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Aug 27, 2016 03:44

It may have just been a coincidence that the weather was sunny now that Fandom was back home in Maryland, but no one was going to complain.

Okay, maybe they were going to complain a little since the sun meant it was in the high 90s 32C outside, but that just meant there was a good excuse for all the ice cream on the buffet table of picnic food ( Read more... )

Well... since Jono was teaching this semester, he supposed it was only right and proper to haul himself down to the picnic to see the new students. Get a feel for what he was up against.

Scar them for life, a little.

That sort of thing.

So he was leaning against the end of a picnic table, flames out, arms crossed over that space where there should have been a chest, just quietly (and not at all ominously) overseeing the crowd.

First person to mention weddings to him was going to get such a look.

Sorry, Jono. Peter hadn't learned about radio yet. And Jono was hard to miss and easy to recognize. And, well.

"Hi." Peter waved at him. "Were the flowers okay? Did the wedding go well this time?"

Oh, Peter. Jono looked so pained, but it wasn't at you in particular. Honest.

//The flowers were fine,// he replied. //They were great, actually. I think my fiance liked them.//

A 'but' hung in the air between them for a few seconds.

//Unfortunately, the third time was still not the charm. And I've been making him sleep on the sofa.//

Jono was still feeling spiteful, yes.

"Oh."

Peter filed the "he" away; he hadn't been sure.

"I'm sorry." He winced. "I'm glad you liked them, though."

//They really were lovely,// Jono agreed. //And the substitutions you made to account for time were great. I'm just sorry they didn't make it to the ceremony that never came to pass.//

Dammit, Jack.

//We might try again, once I'm less inclined toward strangling him, and he still wants real flowers. Not sure when that'll be just yet, though. I'll try to at least give you more notice.//

Did he sound a touch exasperated? Good.

"Can I ask what happened?" Peter said. "It's not really any of my business, I know, but..." if Jono was already saying this much, maybe he wouldn't mind, and Peter was curious.

Jono reached a hand up to pinch at the bridge of his nose.

//An attempted murder,// he muttered. //The would-be killer got an invitation. Which is why I have the bed to myself right now and my fiance is on the sofa until he can lift his arms over his bloody head without me feeling it.//

Peter blinked. "Murder?" Actually...no, he wasn't really going to ask about that. "He'll be okay, though?"

//He'll live,// Jono confirmed. //Got some bruises and cracked ribs, which I can at least hope he learned his lesson from, but I know him better than that.//

This was a man who frequently put his own life in danger because of some inkling that the results might be interesting. Jono was going to bubble-wrap him one of these days and then glue him to a wall.

"I would hope so, if you're marrying him," Peter said. Jono's fiance sounded either flighty or not-too-bright, but it didn't seem like the sort of thing you said to a guy's face.

Nor was it the sort of thing you said to Hannibal's.

Though Jono would be amused enough by whatever happened next that he'd probably try to keep Hannibal from eating whoever said it.

//He's not an easy man to get to really know,// Jono mused with a shrug. //But yes, that part does help.//

Or, rather, it made for a lot of interesting guilt issues that were wrapped directly into one of the major supports for his own sense of self-worth. Complicated. It was complicated.

"I hope I get to meet him someday," Peter said, more to be polite than anything since that'd be a pain.

Jono raised an eyebrow, and then shrugged.

//Stay around the island long enough, and you likely will. He teaches a cooking class through the community centre, if you're into that sort of thing. That, and he has a psychiatric practice, if that's your thing.//

Peter snorted. "I don't really think there's a psychiatrist that could handle what I've got going on up here." Hell (pun intended), it'd driven him mad for a while. "But thanks."

//Fair enough,// Jono replied, easily. //You ever change your mind, I can talk to him for you about appointments, but mostly I'm just bragging about the idiot I'm trying to marry.//

And these were the things he was choosing to focus on.
