Destiny & Free Will, Week II [Monday, Period 2]

May 16, 2011 09:59

The class met outside by the pond, as handwavily ordered.  The flamingos were wandering around Ghanima's improvised classroom, which had plenty of overstuffed pillows for laying about.  Along the edges were small low tables, each with two cushions to sit on and various items placed upon them.

Once the bell rang, Ghanima looked up from where she ( Read more... )

Gabrielle absently petted a flamingo as it wandered by during the lecture, but she couldn't help frowning; was that what Greek tragedy had turned into? She and the boys at the Academy had, if their late-night dormitory conversations were any indication, all wanted to be more uplifting than that. What had gotten into them?

Simon took neat notes and pondered how all this related to knowing one's future because technically it had already happened. Did that even count as destiny?

Occasionally, he was distracted by a flamingo. Or the fact that his clothes weren't realy made for this weather. He was hoping he wasn't going to pass out from the warmth.

Sound off! Look over your handout, and discuss the fate of Oedipus. What does the playwright say about destiny and free will?

"Character is destiny; or not asking the right questions," Scully said, looking at the summary. "If the king hadn't abandoned Oedipus, instead of raising or killing him, he wouldn't have grown up not knowing him, and killing him by mistake. But similarly, if Oedipus weren't the kind of person to both kill a stranger, and save a city, he wouldn't have been in a position to marry his own mother." She frowned. "And if either of them had asked how this destiny of Oedipus killing his father was going to be achieved, it might have been avoided. Instead, they created it, thinking to avoid a certain end-game." She looked up. "Which begs the question, how badly did that seer hate the king, that he told him this much truth?"

At various stations around the room, Ghanima has set up various fortune telling equipment. Tarot cards, books on chiromancy, crystal balls, the I Ching, and various types of runes. Pair up, and either try to divine your own destiny, or that of your partner, and discuss.

[OOC: As it says, have fun! Feel free to handwave, mod the equipment on your table, or use the power of the internet to get a reading for your character.]

Toby eyed the various different kinds of fortune-telling equipment, looking around for a partner who wouldn't mind that the player wouldn't be around till after 6-ish Pacific time.

Scully sat down across from him, then looked him in the eye and told him, "I'm used to people with psychic abilities, but I don't think any future is set in stone." And SP is fine.

"You know psychics?" Toby asked, careful to keep his tone lightly skeptical. What he could do couldn't be called psychic, as far as he understood, but people did tend to group telepathy in the same sort of category.
