"Three excuses for calling into work. It doesn't have to be sickness - it CAN be car-related or something, even if that doesn't work on the island unless you really have a good story - and it doesn't have to be believable. This is a creative exercise, so go ahead and just come up with something good. Go ahead and use the island weirdness if you want to. That's fair game."

Mat ticked off excuses on his fingers. "I'm sorry I can't make it in to class today but there is an attack of giant bloody weasels and my battle skills are needed elsewhere; I'm sorry I can't come in but the clinic scheduled my appointment for just this hour; and I'm sorry but who are you again? Where am I? I go to classes?"

He looked quite pleased with himself.

Jack grinned and held up three fingers. "Sorry, boss, but I went to that new Thai place and I just found out that curry doesn't like me." He put down a finger.

"Uh, I can't come in today because I'm a lizard," he said, putting down another finger not knowing that would happen later today, leaving his 'international gesture' finger up.

"Can't make it in today, unless you send in a car or pay for a taxi. Mine's outta gas, and there's something wrong with the payroll check since it won't cash." He felt that was appropriate. Blame it on the office!

Jill said, "One, Jill's been called out of town on family business and won't be back for four days. Two, horrible cramps. Three, the power's out, so I can't take a shower. You wouldn't want me to come to work gross, would you?"
