Parker walks onto the range, her .Sig and Glock in their locked case, and makes sure everything is ready. She posts the following two notices, to be read by everyone who wants to participate:
"It's very, very different. Not in application, no. But in care? Worlds of difference."
She shows Alanna her .Sig. "Mechanical action starts an internal explosion, which propels the bullet. You have to make sure the gun is clean and put together properly before you even attempt to aim it at anything. Otherwise, it can explode in your hand, if it's dirty or jammed. Got it?"
"Good plan." Parker sighs, then unloads the gun. "Ammunition, slide, cock, and this? Is the safety. It must *always* be on if you're not actively shooting. The trigger is sensitive, you don't want it to go off accidentally. Also? This model of gun holds one bullet in the firing chamber, after it's cocked. To unload it, you have to pop both the cartridge and that bullet. See?"
Alanna carefully, and a bit slowly, unloads and reloads the gun, stopping a few times to remember what she should be doing. And yet, still easier than making your own sword.
((ooc: I only know how to use a rifle, so not much on the knowledge here. And please don't ask how I know how to use a rifle.))
"That's good," Parker says approvingly. "Do it as slow as you need to. Now, here's the stance. Two hands-- none of that one-handed Hollywood crap, that's a good way to sprain a wrist-- one hand bracing the hand holding the gun. Sight down the line of the barrel, like this." Parker points the gun at the target, and pulls the trigger on the unloaded gun. Click.
"Use eye protection and ear protection in here. As you can tell, in an enclosed space it gets *loud*. And there will be smoke blow-back, and a flash of light. Protect your eyes at all times. In a real-life situation, you might not have that option, but there's no reason to skimp on safety if you don't have to." She cocks an eyebrow. "Think you've got it?"
Parker grins at Alanna's assessment, then rolls her eyes. "Idiots with more testosterone than experience perpetuating a myth of derring-do that never was. Sometime I'll show you an Bruce Willis flick, and we can laugh."
Archie, unpacking his 19th century single-shot pistols, shoots Alanna a commiserating look. "I know how you feel. These are so old-fashioned that I had to learn all over again."
"To mine as well," he concedes with a smile. "I used a twenty-first century gun during the zombie attacks, which was a thoroughly eye-opening experience. I'm still somewhat more comfortable with my sword."
"I envy you, then," replied Archie. "We were never really taught -- until the day of our first battle engagement, and then we got weapons pressed into our hands just before we were shoved into the fray. There was never really space aboard ship to practice this sort of markshmanship, nor the ammuntion to spare, either. That's why I'm here; I'd like to get some practice, and actually work on markshmanship." Inspecting his guns for cleanliness, he put on the goggles and ear protection -- the latter looking rather silly over his hair -- and carefully loaded one of the pistols. "The same applies for Fencing Club, for that matter."
