Scott caught up with his wife shortly after she entered their shelter. He partially understood why she was so upset. It was the degree of her distress that had him confused.
Once he'd crawled inside Scott sat down behind Ami and folded her into his arms. She'd talk when she was ready.
Ami clung to Scott. She turned, half-crawling into his lap, her fingers clutching at his shirt. Wrapped in his arms, the first tears broke free and trickled slowly down her cheeks. Ami buried her face in his chest and let the 'words' spill out.
/We're not bad or wrong or evil. We're not. We're not. We've done our best and we didn't have anyone to learn from and we're not horrible and untrustworthy and this is how we are. And we're not wrong, we're not bad. We're not./
Scott stroked Ami's hair and let her cry. With their link wide open he felt her worry, self-doubt, and lingering anger. His reassurance, love, and pride flowed to her.
When Ami's sobs slowed Scott tilted her face up to his. He wiped the tears from the left side of her face with one hand and kissed away those on her right. /They're afraid, and they're military. They want rules and laws. But they're here now. They can choose to trust us or not." He smiled a little. /If they don't, it's their loss./
Ami knew that Scott was trying to cheer her up, but she could only manage half a smile. /I'm just so tired of having to prove myself,/ Ami told him, resting her cheek on his shoulder. /I don't want to be a freak. . .and that - that woman's attitude, isn't like she isn't a telepath as well yet she carries on as though she's somehow different and better than us./
"It's all so frustrating," Ami murmured into the crook of his neck.
