Fashion Adventurist~ No longer the obedient type!

By JJ Lin (2012-01-04)

Hi everyone, I'm JJ Lin. This is my first time writing a column, so please feel free to critique! I'm not only a music enthusiast, but also a fashionable dreamer. I may look like the sunny type and love to dream, but I'm also wild, rebellious, and sexy (misleading! haha~ Look at the picture)... At Yahoo! Fashion, you're about to see the most complete JJ Lin!

My sexy side~ One is cute sexy, one is show girl sexy (My good bro Harry)

Maintaining an open attitude is a must-have spirit when it comes to fashion, but understanding yourself is the most fundamental practice for fashion.

To me, fashion and music are similar in some areas. They will change gradually as you grow up. The first three years after debuting, especially during the first album release, frankly speaking, I didn't have too much self-confidence in my looks. I didn't pay any particular attention to clothing and fashion and only focused on making music. For the album concepts and outfits for album promotions, as a rookie, I completely listened to what my company said. Whatever the stylist gave me, I would wear it. I don't like flowery shirts or perhaps I might feel a certain promotional outfit seemed a bit strange, but I'd still wear it without complaining. Of course, part of the reason was that I didn't have enough self-confidence and was afraid to offer my own opinion. But at the same time, I also trusted the company's professional experience for styling artists.

This is me when I first debuted... I didn't understand fashion and also lacked self-confidence. I completely listened to my company for my look and was the obedient type!

These past few years, after trying different kinds of concepts, I've become bolder when it comes to fashion. I've also set higher self-expectations on my "EQ" (E being the same sound as "clothes" in Chinese, meaning his clothing intelligence). Nowadays, I'm still very willing to listen to different opinions. But when I come across a look that does not suit myself, I would communicate (to the stylist) or just directly say no!

In general, everyone would have a certain set of expectations with the impression of "singer-songwriters." For example, if you can sing well, that's good. As for how you look, it's not a big deal and whatever seems to fit is fine. However, deep within, I actually have a very wild side that is different from the sunny boy image. I want to break out of the framework that's been set. Of course, I can't be too extreme to the point that people can't accept. But it's to present it in a way that's a bit more clever. Just like when I discovered that fashion is a very good form of media~ Wearing it is even easier to express yourself than talking about it! Just like when you're wearing Gothic clothing, you don't have to say much and the mysterious, dark, intense aura will naturally appear.

My sunny side... It's my first time writing a column, please feel free to critique.

Usually, I really like to immerse myself in the fashion world... Flipping through male fashion magazines (August Man, Esquire, GQ...); observing the artists of various countries; checking out the outfits worn by cool guys on the street; collecting European collectibles and Japanese fashion brand names (Dior, Alexander McQueen, Comme des Garçon, Uniform Experiment... I'll tell everyone in more detail next time) and toys; and making friends with those in the fashion circle. Two years ago, I finally couldn't suppress my unquenchable passion towards fashion and boldly established my own fashion brand SMG. This year, I just opened a store in Taiwan and hope that everyone will like it.

My fashionable side... Me and my SMG~ The cardigan is a perfect match for fall/winter.

After grasping my fashion sense and starting to be a designer, frankly speaking, my time spent on shopping has been drastically reduced. Every time I go out, I'd only concentrate on a few brand names. Sometimes I don't even need to try it on because just by looking at the cutting, I'd already know that it's OK. Usually after going inside the store, I'd spend about 20 odd minutes and I'd already have my hands full of my "trophies" with the clothes for an entire season all purchased.

However, I do rather like going shopping with my girlfriend to help her pick out clothes and then buy them for her to see how happy it makes her. Even if it takes 5 or 6 hours, I wouldn't be tired! Once, my former girlfriend told me, "You're so nice. None of my ex boyfriends wanted to go shopping with me." That was when I realized that I'm really different. Maybe it's because I've gone shopping with my mom since I was a kid. Haha!

*Lastly, I'm going to plug my songs a bit. My new album "學不會 Lost N Found" has already been released. Tell me which song is your favorite!
