My Puerto Rico vacation is quickly coming to an end. I'm not sure whether I can say my stay has been fantastic because of some annoyances that popped up here and there, but overall I enjoyed spending time with family I haven't seen in years. Who knows, maybe this is the last time I will see my maternal grandparents, who are in their nineties. It's interesting to see how everything has changed around here, especially people. There are people like my cousin Mari, who are fun, ambitious, and friendly. Then there are others like my cousin Adelaida, who are dry, apathetic, and cold. Adelaida never used to be like that. Mari told me that Adelaida's on anti-depressants, something I surmised after having a few conversations with her. Conversations with Adelaida are more often on the stranger side than not. She doesn't laugh at the right times--or laugh in general--and she has a tendency to be condescending about essentially everything. In the car, she told me she wanted to be more like Ana, who is my brother Francisco's evil wife. Adelaida believes Ana's attitude and strictness are admirable. I, on the other hand, believe Ana is immature and insensitive. So to each his own then - let Adelaida continue on her path to becoming a frigid bitch.

My sister Camelia is much nicer than I remember. She calls me everyday to see what I'm up to, and gives suggestions about things to do. She offers rides to places too, and generally has made me feel like I'm included in Puerto Rico life. (Included in the sense that she wants to hang out, or help me get in touch with more family, in addition to helping me find fun things to do.) Yesterday I went to El Yunque, Puerto Rico's national rain forest, with my sister, her husband Jorge, and my nephew Coche. Love that place.

At El Yunque, I stood beside and under a waterfall for the first time in my life. Standing underneath the waterfall was simultaneously exhilarating and horrifying.

My nephew Coche and I saw natives smearing themselves with paint at the foot of the waterfall, so we decided to join them; Elevation: 1,576 feet

With my grandmother, Manchi.

At Piñones with Adelaida, the very pregnant Camelia, and Mari.

With all the family except Papa and Francisco; Photoshoot with Camelia

I don't want to make the entry too photo heavy, so I'll stop here.  As any Puerto Rican would tell me, I have to hit the beach more before leaving pa k no parezca hincho. Since I leave Puerto Rico on Thursday, I should go to the beach every day. Before finally heading back to Princeton this Sunday, I'm stopping by West Palm Beach for a few days to see my dad. Can't wait to get back! :)
