After Drake, Taylor and Ginger discover that the person who killed Jennifer Christopher came from or escaped to the Nevernever they decide to split up. Ginger decides that she needs to do a few things on her own. Drake and Taylor decide to seek out Randall for his knowledge of the Fae.
Taylor attempts to contact Randall by phone but gets no answer. Drake looks up Canter, R in the phone book and gets three addresses. Rather than taking the time to investigate each of the addresses Randall calls upon magic. He casts a tracking spell to help them find where Randal lives. He and Taylor hop on her bike speeding towards Randall's home. Taylor has a difficult time staying on the road with Drake trying to keep control of his spell and touch her inappropriately at the same time. They soon make it to the quiet lower middle class neighbourhood that Randall lives in.
The two pull up to Randall house, with his truck parked in the driveway, without noticing that they're being followed. Just as they're walking up Randall's drive way they're fired upon by a couple of thugs. The thugs miss with their first shot and Drake manages to put up a mystical shield deflecting a second bullet into the tire of Randall's truck. Taylor calls upon the powers granted to her by Loam to hyper boil the liquids in the thugs’ car making a quick getaway impossible. Drake's shield drops and thugs capitalize shooting him in the leg leaving a nasty wound. Using his body as a shield Drake attempts to drag Taylor to the safety of Randall's backyard.
Up until this now Randall has been watching the fight from the window of his home. He now wades into the fray by grabbing a sledge hammer from the back of his truck and pins the two thugs to the ground. Then Taylor manages to blind one of the thugs by freezing his eyes shut. At this point in time the thugs surrender realizing they can't win the fight.
Realizing that the police are probably on this way Drake takes the time to investigate the thugs’ car. In the car he finds a bag containing a roll of money, a knife and some clothes. A while after Randall looks at the contents of the bag discovering a piece of paper with the names Taylor Hayworth, Randall Carter, Ginger Baker and Drake Beasly written on it.
Randall takes the opportunity to interrogate his captive thugs. He uses all his powers of intimidation to wring information out of the thugs. He uses all his strength to slam the sledgehammer down beside their head in hopes that it will loosen their tongues. He manages to discover that the thugs’ names are John Korman and Roger Donne. Randall's interrogation also reveals that they were sent by Anton Lokosic to get rid of them.
At this point the police arrive and take the thugs into the custody. They question the Randall, Drake and Taylor who manage to convince them that they're innocent bystanders. The police then take Drake and his "girlfriend" Taylor to the hospital to have his leg looked after. While there he almost kills a man by short circuiting the life supporting keeping him alive. It isn't until the next afternoon that Drake is released from hospital.
The group decides that once they've had time to rest the four of them need to talk...
