I just got the most bizarre letter in my mail at work. It was an invitation to an information meeting for OSSTF (Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation). I seems they are trying to recruit us CEMC staffers since we apparently fall under the category of "Educational Employees" that work with high schools. I would say this is a bit of a stretch...I don't consider myself an education employee in the sense that I would fall under their auspices.
Also the way I got the letter was very cloak and dagger. Apparently the women who deals with our shipping was sent a package via courier. Then it were several letter addressed to each person in CEMC. I suspect that OSSTF doesn't want the University management to find out about this meeting.
I am very wary about the idea of joining a union since they have a number of very good things they do. They also have a number of very bad things they do. The one definite benefit I can see with joining OSSTF is the ability to buy into the Teachers Pension Plan which is good.
