History has been made:Our new planetary system is Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Yes, that's right, we're down to 8, Pluto is no longer a planet, according to the new rules for what a planet is: "a celestial body that is in orbit around the sun, has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a ... nearly round shape, and has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit."
Pluto, Ceres, and 2003 UB313 are under a new classification of "dwarf planets," along with "small solar system bodies," a term for asteroids, comets and other natural satellites. Charon (Pluto's largest moon) is no longer under consideration for any special designation (including being considered a moon, sorry...). 2003 UB313 is the largest known "dwarf planet" to date.
Oddly, only about 300 astronomers ended up casting ballots...
What do three assault rifles, 13 handguns, million dollars worth of pounds of cocaine and two duffle bags of ammunition have in common? It's what authorities confiscated over 14 months of investigating the Cities' worst gang, the Vice Lords. Of 8 members arrested - many supposed high-ranking members, 7 were indicted in federal court and one by the state. Considered the largest and oldest Cities gang, active in drug trafficking, prostitution, and tied to shootings, stabbings and homicides.
With violent crime up 30% from last year, robberies up 32% and aggravated assault 26%, authorities say these arrests are merely one step to making the Cities safe again, though violent activity has spiked in the past two weeks compared to the year so far.
