For Allen, I dunno. I had this odd feeling that he was hiding something, and that's always constantly *lying* in some form or fashion. Either he tries to be who he is not, or he exaggerates it, or he tries to rid himself of his lesser qualities. Either way, I love that ex-brat. But, it has been popping up every which way during the past, um, like 20 chapters, how Allen's old personality is resurfacing toward the others. And now, with the latest chap, I feel as if it's hitting the roof, but yet, I'm still so happy to see that happening. Either I am cruel, or I am just grateful for Hoshino's revelations for us. I am also pleased that it all kinda flows with what I've been writing, which is a thank god moment, and I guess my half-assed assumptions were correct. Sigh. There's too much to say on the subject.
As for Cross in comparison, I do believe he's got a lot of mystery up his sleeve, along with those pretenses that seem to match Allen's. And like, the fic I'm writing about them is based around tests, how Cross 'raises' Allen to be a certain way, how Allen accepts this, begrudgingly, and how he also opposes Cross whenever he gets the chance to do it successfully. Etc. Oy.
AND THEN there is Lavi. Whom I love but can feel apart of him as a character at the same time. There is something I don't like to talk about concerning Lavi, personality quirks, what have you. I think it must be the whole 'becoming-feeling human' thing. Something has sprung awake in him, which could be damaging in the end, but he still has to suck it up and wipe his face of feeling just for his job alone. He, along with Allen, are having wars with themselves, and that's one of the most attractive things about the series. Oh, and the jeans.

*nodnod* He hides a lot, and he's always been a study in contradiction and denial. It's one of the things I've always loved about him. I've always thought that Allen was very protective of himself. On a personal level, that is. He presents himself as approachable, but he really kind of isn't in a lot of ways.
I know what you mean about Lavi. And to be honest, I think that part of my problem with picking Lavi apart as a character is that I identify so strongly with him. Every time I start trying to connect dots with him, I start second-guessing myself and wondering if I'm reading him right. Really the only difference is that he currently expresses himself in a different manner than I do. Sort of. >_> And yes, his assuming personas to do his job is problematic, but we do see Lavi's thoughts sometimes, too, and there is a difference between the way he is in his own head and the way he acts. I have to believe that that is more what he's truly like.
But anyway, yeah, the internal conflicts that many of the characters have do make it a lot more interesting!

Uh, I didn't exactly add anything new there. ;;
