He almost feels like he’s a child again; watching action movies where the hero saves the heroine, battles the villain, finds the treasure. He was obsessed with the Indiana Jones movies, begged Nathan to take him to see them as soon as they came out. One Christmas, his older brother got him a felt hat and a toy whip, so he could pretend he was the man himself, braving perilous journeys to save the day once more.
Now he’s on an adventure of his own, his own prize to seek. But the girl in the pictures doesn’t look quite how he’d imagined her from the paintings. Still, she is his goal; he has to save her life.
And then he bumps into her.
A connection is made almost instantly; Peter feels it in his gut. There’s something about this girl that fits, makes something unlock in his mind. Sparkling eyes, golden hair, sad little smile. He almost wishes she was the treasure he is looking for. Speaks words of comfort if only to see her face, that smile, before she disappears around the corner.
Then all hell breaks loose; Peter finds the villain, arrives almost too late, hurtles into the girl from earlier and realises it was her all along. With heart pounding and mind racing, he tells her to run, find people, find lights, anything to save her from being tainted by the evil pursuing them. He falls to save her, and the last notion he has is the hope that she gets away safely.
She appears before him like an angel, heaven sent, and he breathes again, the life flowing back into his body. Her name is Claire, she says, and it sounds like a miracle to his ears. He wonders aloud whether or not she really is the one he’s meant to save, but knows in his heart she is.
It’s only later, in the jail cell, that he realises how special she actually is, both to the world and to him. She sent him on his destiny and saved him all at the same time.
It’s a gift he’ll learn to treasure forever.
