Never Been Kissed

I didn't watch this movie when it first came out. I'm not too thrilled about Drew Barrymore. She was cute in E.T. She has not, however, aged well.

But I liked the idea of the story, so I decided to give her a chance. She surprised me. I still don't think she's a brilliant actress, but she did well in this role.

Her character, Josie Geller, made it to the age of 25 without having been kissed. That's unusual. To me, though, it seems almost normal.

I find myself looking back on the major kisses in my life. There was Amy in August of 1985. A wonderful experience, and one that remains unmatched in several respects. Then there was my fiancée in January of 1994, after a date. Seven months later, she became my bride, and our kiss made the papers. In March of 2000, I kissed one woman in Kansas City and another in Sacramento. Both very nice people, but neither made much of an impression on me.

So there you have it. Four women in almost thirty-five years.

I've had other chances. One time, I met this woman from online when she invited me to her house. Her lovely dress seemed an odd choice for a woman sitting at home alone. Showing me around her house, she stopped by the kitchen and told me a funny story about the time when her girlfriend left a strap-on in the dishwasher. She explained that she hadn't had sex without a condom since she broke up with her fiancé. Then she let her parakeet out of its cage, sat down on her couch, and leaned back. The bird perched on the front of her dress and pecked at the buttons. I think this was supposed to be sexy. I'm fairly sure she wouldn't have slapped me if I'd tried to kiss her. But I didn't want to, so I didn't.

Of the four women I've kissed, I've made love with only one of them. Rather than finding this lack of experience depressing, I take pride in it. The next woman I kiss is going to know that she's dealing with a klutz in this department. I'll have a lot to learn from her. But she'll also know why I'm a klutz. She'll know that this is something I've waited for because it's special and because she's special. With that in mind, she'll be patient with me. The patience will pay off. I'll be a very willing student, indeed.
