Walt takes Jesse's apathy as a form of betrayal and like a paranoid boyfriend he resorts to checking Jesse's phone messages (ironically something Walt always resented Skyler doing to him).
It's fascinating how pseudoromantic the relationship between Walter and Jesse is. Even though they're not homosexual, the way they interact has overtones of infatuation/bonding/rejection/refusal/hurt/comfort. It's fascinating to watch and to see you analyze this is a joy. :D
But if we listen to Jesse's words, his rants about contamination and the sneering condescension in his voice...we know who Jesse really learned this behavior from. He is still Walt's boy; still Mr White's pupil. Jesse is still puffing himself up like a blowfish to scare away the bigger fish as Walt taught him to long ago. Jesse didn't need Walt to coach him for this; his education is already deeply ingrained in him.I like this insight

Walt and Jesse are in a marriage of sorts. I think Jesse is often a surrogate Skyler in Walt's crime life as well as a surrogate Junior. I'll talk about this more in my next recap but Jesse is definitely a spouse figure as well as a son figure. It's not a sexual thing, but there is something very romantic about their relationship. Maybe because Walt feels so much more passionate about his crime life than his home life.
I only have one more Walt & Jesse meta post that I can do (S5, part 1) before the final episodes air next summer. But I'm sure I'll have loads to say about the first run of S5 episodes. Maybe I'll do a Walt & Jesse predictions post sometime in the hiatus?
Amazing re-cap again!! I LOVE that they're getting longer and longer!
Walt is in that same vulnerable position that Jesse used to be in back when they were working with the likes of Tuco.
Reading your analysis is so fulfilling because I get to watch the episodes again with new, more informed sets of eyes. I had noticed the role reversal but didn't realize the extent of it - Walt getting constantly beat up, being the needy one while Jesse is the one who 'provides'.
Jesse doesn't like Gus or Hank, but he doesn't like murdering people either, so he's hoping the two douchebags will just cancel each other out.
That was one of the most unfunny, funniest scene ever. If that makes any sense.
Jesse however knows from Mr White's"No" to Go Carts that he doesn't do friendly interaction for no reason.
So true. Sniff.
Mike orders Walt not to even talk to Jesse and their new roles are now clear; Jesse is a protected member of the inner circle and Walt is a contemptible underling on the verge of being whacked. At this point, I felt sorry

The S5 part one will likely be longer still. They just add more layers of complexity to W/J every season. *sigh* Only one more recap till next summer. What will I do with my hiatus now?
At this point, I felt sorry for Walt. Just a little bit. Not much. But it was there.
Me too. It's like playground bullying, you know? Jesse can't hang out with the cool kids unless he stops talking to his nerdy friend who nobody likes.
I wonder if Gus was ever afraid that Walt would kill Jesse... I thought Gus's 'Stay away from Pinkman' was because of this fear that Walt was planning another murder. Wow, I never thought about it that way, but you could be right. I always thought Gus was just counting on the fact that Walt risked everything to save Jesse at the end of S3 and figuring that Walt cared too much about Jesse to consider killing him. And indeed, Walt never does consider killing Jesse, even though that was Walt's obvious go-to plan when Gus was trying to replace him with Gale. Walt chooses to poison a child before he even thinks about

To answer your question from the other post, yes I'm only watching for the first time now :) I watch too many shows and keep losing track of some. Later the girl gushes to Hank about Jesse's dreamy blue eyes which she couldn't resist anymore than tweekers can resist the blue meth. (from a review of season3) I just love how you can connect dots like this. Following this meta is such a pleasureable read and gives awesome insight to how complex this show can be. I really enjoyed season 4. (So upset about Gus though... I was spoiled a while ago about his death, but the scene still made me yell 'no' at the screen. My favs always die or disappear :() This show just keeps getting better and better, doesn't it? And is it me or was the 4th season more blue than the previous ones, regarding cinematography?
I envy you watching BB for the first time! I'd love to erase this show from my memory just so I could experience it all again. So glad you are enjoying my Walt/Jesse centric meta posts. I do enjoy obsessing over every little detail so I'm glad it's appreciated.
Gus was a great character and a great loss though his memory does loom over Season 5 and I still hope we'll learn more about his Chilean backstory.
S4 is quite blue. I always associate BB with the colour yellow.
Gus has said he "sees something" in Jesse. Does Gus see Max in Jesse? It seems Jesse and Max were both relative innocents who were plucked off the streets and drawn into darker life than they were really cut out for. I never thought about that before and now I am having SOME FEELINGS about it, let me just tell you.
maybe feels more entitled than usual to be a dick to Jesse. Like 500% entitled.
Jesse cares enough to ask the older man if he can walk, but he then tells him to fuck off out of his life forever. God, if ONLY.
but I doubt Jesse has ever scored 96% on any test he's taken before Awww, Jesseee.
Jesse Pinkman is getting a happy ending. Only...it doesn't quite feel right. Jesse + happines = ERROR
Walt's the one who's broke Jesse apart and brainwashed him to suit his own purpose. Walt can't call that love. He can only shake Jesse's hand and trick him into a new partnership. *pukes tears*
