273 - "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?" (Who watches the watchmen?)

Mar 11, 2009 12:12

No one, that's who. No, seriously. Let me break this down for you.

Order of command, starting at the bottom - Scoobies. Sorry, guys, because in my book, any member of the Scoobies should be right up there with me, but that's not the way the Council sees it. Saw it. You get the idea.

Then there's the Slayer, which would be me. Which was changed to me and Kendra, then me and Faith, then back to just me again, then to me and potential slayers (who I didn't know existed!), then to me, Faith, and ten thousand other Slayers. I'll get to the re-structuring part in a minute, though.

Then you've got the Watcher's Council, high up, over in jolly old England for some bizarre reason. They say, "Hey, let's send some stuffy British guy to watch over the current Slayer and he'll do what we tell him to do" which, thank God, wasn't what Giles ended up doing. He was sort of rebellious in his early years with Ethan and everything, which might have helped that, but still. Wesley came along when Faith showed up (although you have to wonder why he wasn't there when Kendra was still alive. Really, she might still be alive if he'd been there, you know? Or possibly, she could've ended up deader sooner, since Wesley was fairly useless back then, just listening to the whole Council. No offense, Wesley!)

So, there you go. Big group of British people think they can run me, run all the Slayers in the world now (yeah right), and do they answer to anyone? No. Well, I made them answer to me finally when Glory popped into our universe and Giles got his job back. They even told Giles at one point that he had to drug me to take away my powers as some sort of bizarre Slayer rite-of-passage. Hello! Newsflash, guys; I can take care of myself. Well, with some Scooby-help, but really, this is a pretty outdated system. It's why I'm refusing to let it happen again. Giles and Andrew (and even Wesley) being Watchers? That's one thing. Because I know they care about us, they're not going to treat us like a number or a disposable girl to be replaced by the next Slayer who comes along.

Honestly, I think it's sort of fitting that the whole Watcher's Council got blown up, too. Hey, I'm not saying that it's good they died! Just it was symbolic that it got blown up, sort of paving the way for less watchery-type things. In that respect, I guess I have to thank Caleb for that much.

Hmmmm? Watchmen? Not Watchers? Oh.

Well, let me get back to you on that after talking to Xander or Andrew. I saw them reading it the other idea and buying tickets for the movie. Oh! So I guess the answer is, who watches Watchmen?

My nerdy friends. Several times, apparently.
