recently, just because (in 2 sentences):

Specimen days - Michael Cunningham (the guy who did The Hours): It is a uncomplicated, enjoyable read. However, it straingingly ties in Walt Whitman as a somewhat odd theme and has an android character.

Chronicles - Bob Dylan (the musician): Parts of the book are insightful and interesting, what with Bob's life being so obviously grand. He loses you when he talks about music too much, namedrops, gloats, and generally talks about stuff you couldn't care less about.

The Plot Against America - Philip Roth (the Human Stain guy): An interesting and entertaining historical fiction, even if it is a little tedious at times. Roth writes very jewy, for lack of a better term, take that for what its worth.

Visits from the Drown Girl - Steven Sherrill: This guy's sophomore effort (he wrote The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break, which is really good). Inflicted with a minor case of the sophomore slump, the book drags on due to the characters' slowness even though the plot is original.

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man - James Joyce: I mean, it's Joyce. I can't believe somebody made a movie out of this.

I just ordered this from OhioLink through UC (does anyone else use this? It's pretty amazing) because it looks like some hot shit:
