I do enjoy the archy and mehitabel poems. The first one that comes to mind is the one about "Warty Bliggens."

Warty Bliggens

Yup, that one is good too.

In fact I like a lot of the Don Marquis poems, particularly the ones about Mehitabel and Cleopatra.

my mother named their last cat "Mehitabel" after the books, which she loved.

Oh, how wonderful!

And I can just guess the personality of a cat so named. "It's cheerio my deario that pulls a lady through..."

I named my cat Mehitabel when I was just a kid in my early teens -- I loved Archy & co. I initially read a few snippets of his work in a book on American humor (published in the 40s) and then went on to investigate the library for more. Amusingly, Don Marquis is quoted as saying it would be a pity if future generations knew him only for his work on a cockroach and an alley cat. He had high hopes that he'd be known for his angsty and high-falutin' Broadway play based on the life of Jesus Christ!

There's an over-the-top (and bad) animated film based on the works of Don Marquis called "Shinbone Alley", where Carol Channing plays the voice of Mehitabel.

The poor man! It's like Shakespeare saying "I don't want to be remembered for my silly little plays, but for my beautiful sonnets".

He had high hopes that he'd be known for his angsty and high-falutin' Broadway play based on the life of Jesus Christ!

Now I'm picturing Don Marquis as Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Carol Channing as Mehitabel - ! Hee. That's not bad casting, voice-wise.
