And Now The End Is Near

Well I know I wanted to work a few less hours than I have been working but I didn't mean I wanted to quit work altogether. Woolworths went into the hands of administrators last wednesday. I have a job for the next week or so but after that who knows.

I had a conversation with a customer that went like this

Customer: Its a shame you are closing tomorrow
Me: No we're not
Customer: Yes you are the administrators have been called in
Me: yes they have
Customer: So you're closing tomorrow
Me: No we're not
Customer: Why not the news said you were
Me: Adminstrators take over the running of the company, try to find a buyer for it and failing that will wind the company down, but they won't close stores until they have to, the stock has to be sold to pay the creditors.
Customer: so you're not closing then
Me: No not until after christmas at the earliest

The trouble is people think that the adminstrators are the end of the line but they're not, they will do everything they can for the company and the staff until such time as there is no other way but to liquidate the company. I have been at this store for 12 years, I may get redundancy but probably won't it depends on what happens. We have been busier than ever, takings last thursday were up 30% on the same day last year. It's a shame that we couldn't have been that busy for along time.

So woolies will dissapear from the high street that's for sure, 30,000 staff will be out of work, it's my opinion (and I know no more than anyone else I'm just guessing) that the adminstrators will try and find a buyer(s) for all or part of the company and will gradually oversee the closure of stores. After all the stock has to be got rid of, I hope that they will close other places and send it to us, the longer we can be open the better but nothing is certain. The only thing I know for sure is that our district is taking more money than the other districts and hopefully that will count for something. I will be out of work at somepoint in the not too distant future but with a bit of luck it won't be for too long. The only thing that I'm not looking forward to is that I will probably have to work saturdays and or sundays which I don't do at present. I'm not sure I know how to apply for jobs anymore, I'll have to blow the dust off my cv and get that out but with the climate as it is who knows......

There are reports that some of the supermarkets are interested in the stores as they are in prime high street locations and most have licences to sell food and alcohol, maybe they could sell the stores with the staff attatched, a bit like selling a house with a sitting tenant.
